Trump used to be a liberal or your dad? Because I've found the "I was a liberal when I was younger until I became a smart, older conservative" story some of our generation's parents give is rather dubious if you get them to say what exactly it is that made them a liberal before.

i think i went pretty much backwards of that. OK, not really. I didn't pay too much attention to politics when i was younger, but i supported ross perot because i naively said that 'the country needs to be run like a business'. but the older i get, the more i see how unfair the world is to lots of people and how it is intentionally kept that way, the more bleedin' heart i become.

The underlying message is: "having ideals is fine until you start paying taxes."

I am grateful for having parents who always voted (D) and have actually become more liberal as seniors.

5 years ago, I was a bleeding heart liberal. Now? Not so much, much more moderate. I think this happens with most people, they change their views several times throughout their life

Both, but in this case I was talking about my dad

Isnt it delicious irony that as people become one with their conservative values as they also become the largest consumers and recipients of those horrible social services they crow about.

Sort of like those proud farmers who get government subsidies and when policy shits on them, they get bailed out seems so resentful of social programs. We need food supply security and it's not like they are cashing out (that seems to be big agriculturals payday).

I think the 25/39 thing is more about change resistance than anything else. The world around us changes more than we change ourselves.

My views are mostly the same. I feel more moderate because the extreme views are more distant from mine now.

Military spending is probably the biggest change for me. I must be in a very small minority of vets who favor extreme cuts.

But Milty, we need a navy twice the size of the 1914 Navy.

We can cut by just bringing our troops home. 19 years is Afghanistan is enough. Same with Iraq and a number of other places.

Genuinely would like to know what happened over the last 5 years that pushed you to be more moderate. I’ve had the exact opposite happen for me, I’m 40 and I’ve gone from “sure I’ll vote Democrat” to a “Biden isn’t liberal enough” guy who is getting involved with local elections.
