Statues of Limitations: Politics Thread

One of the things that always gets left out of what's happening in academia is that many religious institutions have explicit policies regulating what their faculty can and cannot say. There's a lot less academic freedom at those places than even at the Oberlins of the world.

So, yeah, I'm glad I teach in a place where I can in fact say "evolution is good science" and explain how a scientific theory works according to Karl Popper's philosophy of science.

One thing though--as we increasing move to an on-line environment, there's going to be a lot more documentation of what happens in a class. Not sure what the effects of that are going to be. But as chair, I have heard complaints like "prof so and so tends to dismiss comments made by women" and though I can talk to prof so and so, there's not a lot that I can do about something so vague--but if we start recording classes on video that changes things.

The administration released list of companies that received most money from small business bailout loans. Look, they did something good... followed the letter of the law.

What does that mean?

She has decided that trans women aren't true women and is using fairly spurious reasons to do this. She's doing this to legitimize her discrimination.

I took her comments to mean that in order for someone born male to be allowed in a woman's bathroom, certain conditions beyond the word of the person should be required. It doesn't seem malicious, or anti trans, to me that women want a safe space. I'll refrain from posting more on this topic before reading some of the links, because I don't want to venture too far out on a limb without understanding why folks disagree with me on this.

@realDonaldTrump
They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct. Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!

It was the statue to be named later in the Greenland deal.

Maybe they should change their name to the Fat Orange Fucks and have a Trump caricature as their logo.

This is a really good point-I know a woman who was fired from a teaching position in a Delaware Catholic school for signing a pro-choice petition.

There's a decent amount of data suggesting that no, conservative students are not victimized by their left wing professors and that left wing faculty are much more likely to come under attack than right wingers. But the "college campuses are out of control narrative" plays really well with the base and resonates with a certain number of moderates.

The most negative reaction from students I've ever gotten was when I said I didn't think the Golden Girls was that great a show.

like if you want to have a conversation about the polarization of america, sure. but when you say its largely one side that's intransigent and belligerent in their beliefs then you are not a serious person.

I think she is wrong from the start. I actually see one side consistently saying the sky is not blue and 2+2 is not 4. If there is more outrage and assurance in their beliefs from the left, that's the reason why. Well, that and the fact that one side is willing to support homophobic, racist classists who literally (used correctly) want to destroy the poor and middle class.
