I don't think anyone thinks if they didn't play this wouldn't have happened. In fact, quite the contrary. they were hoping to achieve some kind of healing by playing.

The players did talk about not playing though because of the protests going on. They were worried about taking the spotlight off of racial justice and distracting people by giving them something else to focus on.

Sarge is just saying that the players couldn’t have stopped this and shouldn’t have any regrets for making the choice they made

Maybe I'm misinterpreting George Hill's quotes below, and if I am I apologize, but that's what I took away from them.
"We shouldn't have even came to this damn place, to be honest," Hill said Monday of the season restart in Orlando, via Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today. "Coming here just took all the focal points off what the issues are. But we're here. It is what it is. We can't do anything from right here. But I think definitely when it all settles, some things need to be done."

"I think this world has to change," the guard said Monday. "Our police department has to change. Us a society has to change. Right now, we're not seeing any of that. Lives are being taken as we speak, day in and day out. There's no consequence or accountability for it. That's what has to change."

Exactly, and also that they (individually) had a choice to make and they made it. George Hill (for example) could have opted out, so it's a little odd to hear him talk like he didn't have that option.

Him walking past the cops after he just murdered two people and maimed a third as the cops move to tear gas protestors is surreal.

It is absolutely enraging that police thank these fucking losers for coming with their guns. A 17 year old kid who has no clue what he's doing. And then that kid murders people and they are so fucking hell bent on tear gassing folks that they just let him walk on by.

OK thanks, understood. I didn't see that quote before. Still not sure if he thinks not coming would've prevented anything, but it's definitely a possibility that he's implying that.

Seems like a pretty obtuse reading. It seems like he's implying it may be inappropriate for them to be playing and this incident is a reminder of that. Just because you make a choice doesn't mean you can't have reservations about it. Either way it's a stray comment in a press conference after a playoff game it's not like these are prepared remarks.

The league really did that? It's kinda crazy. They'd have a better chance to make a difference by NOT playing and working for things in their communities.

Totally get what you're saying, and don't necessarily disgaree, but these games are also probably the most-watched television program every afternoon and evening with an enormous BLACK LIVES MATTER across the entire court and the social justice messages on individual jerseys.

I'm not a fan of slacktivism or corporations just jumping on whatever CSR trend is hot at the moment, but there is also an enormous value to that type of exposure for any message.

Also, agree re: pro athlete egos.

I think there's definitely a case to be made that boycotting games in the name of civil rights would have been a massive stand and might have been more impactful than the gestures that the league has made. I don't know if it would have had the desired effect because of how the reasons for doing it would have been entangled with the pandemic, but it would have been a historic moment in terms of race relations in this country.

And I think it's silly to say it's "pro athlete egos." The reality of the situation is that many of the most influential Black people in this country are basketball players. They've become activists in their own right, and I think it's moreso that a lot of players had concerns that people would stop talking about the racial issues once games resumed and things went "back to normal," which I don't think they're wrong about. Sure enough, only a few weeks in, another incident that's more of the same, and now, they're effectively trapped in a bubble putting on a TV show. It's not ego, it's just a different kind of powerlessness.

And I think it's important to note that part of the reason why this is the case is because this country has a history of killing and unfairly persecuting civil rights leaders, which both (a) robbed a movement of close to an entire generation of leaders and (b) makes becoming a leader less enticing. So it shouldn't be surprising that the people picking up the mantle to some extent tend to be already wealthy and famous for other things.

Now you're being obtuse. I also said the cop shouldn't have had his gun out and I retracted most of what I said when it seemed like maybe the man didn't see the gun was out. I also never said he should have been shot. I said Blake should have known he might get shot reaching into his car. Big fucking difference.

I retracted that when I found out the gun wasn't out the whole time. And I never said the man should have been shot. I said the cop should be charged if possible. I just said it was dumb for the man to reach into his car and he put his kids in danger by doing so. It was and he did.

I refuse to watch it again. I should have held my tongue or watched it again to be sure. But I never said he should have been shot. I said the man made a mistake reaching into his car because that will usually get you shot. There's a big difference between saying someone deserved to get shot and understanding why someone was shot.

But again, my original comment was based on me thinking the gun was out the whole time and the man was ignoring the drawn gun and reaching into his car. I retracted that when I found out the gun was not out. At no point did I think he deserved to get shot, just that he made a mistake and put his kids in danger. Again, I thought he was ignoring a drawn gun and I even said that in the post. I said he should not have gone to his car when the cop had a gun pointed at him. That was incorrect and I admitted it.

In any case, CB's comment was stupid and is something nobody said, including me.

why the rush to qualify the murder in the first place? if we're past the days of measuring the skirt lengths of rape victims, can't we move past this type of rationalization as well?

moreover, when people say things like 'the same thing would have happened to a white guy in that situation,' it's ignoring such a mountain of evidence compiled by so many different government agencies, universities, and non-profits as to be akin to anti-vaccine movements or climate change denial

EDIT: upon reflection, I guess we're not really past those days but it's nice to dream

And simply contrast Blake with the white guy two days later who murdered two people and was still carrying his gun while casually walking towards police.
