I will eat and enjoy a burger with nice melty American cheese but I disagree with Kenji that other cheeses' flavor will "compete with a burger." Also I would suggest that cream cheese is excellent on a burger (though a bit messy) if you just want the cheesy mouthfeel without adding much flavor.

Deli provolone is my go-to burger cheese.

Not really down the the serious eats folks on this one. It's all preference of course.

I like all kinds of cheese on burgers. Swiss is probably my go to. Cheddar at the bottom of the list. Never tried cream cheese so I'll give it a shot.

Went downtown on an extended walk for the first time in 4 months and noticed how DEAD it all was. Kinda sad. Also, I guess it's good that people aren't randomly hanging out without distancing and such anymore.

Provolone was my go to, but i found it to be kinda dry and didn’t add much flavor unless I put a lot on each burger. With he American slices, I just put one on each burger and they melt quickly and taste good.

On a cheese steak or a meatball hoagie or something like that, I’m using provolone though.

Always american on a cheese steak for me.

For me cheese choice on a burger also depends on cooking method and the ground beef itself.

Also love blue cheese burgers but it's best infrequently.

i was told i am pretty much german (austrian/prussian) with a little czech. haven't taken one of those dna things for fear they might find one of my cousins who went off the grid 15 years ago. don't know if finding him would be good or bad.

however most latinos think i'm brown. ender inciarte actually gave me one of those second takes and thought i was his teammate miguel montero when they played with the dbacks. i thought blue eyes would most likely discount this idea, but whatever. probably opened the door to some great friendships and some crazy conversations over the years.

always attracted a good number of latina girls, in addition to italian and jewish.

Well @Slowhand, shrooms - the Jalapenos would be that socialist swiss burger monstrosity, but substituting hot peppers for the fungus is clearly subversive.

For cheese steak I have always preferred provolone. Wiz never did it for me, but American is an acceptable option. Watched a guy ask for cheddar and get laughed at. Clearly this was not somewhere behind the counter, but why would it be? I think that was in Old City.

Wiz or Provolone, for whatever reason, I don't like American on my cheesesteak

I think it's growing up in the LHV for me. Cheese steaks there aren't really Philly cheese steaks.
