I don’t think I’d go, whether for work or vacation. My work definitely wouldn’t make me either

My daughter's convention in Denver this past weekend got canceled. I don't want to stereotype, but the fact that it was a bunch of physicists leads me to believe some may been traveling from East Asia.

I have a convention for OT next month and the organization just sent out an announcement that they’ll update us pretty frequently bc it could be cancelled. My company hasn’t taken an official position on stopping travel or anything but did tell us to buy trip insurance for everything just in case. I don’t theyink they’d make anyone go if they felt strongly about it

It's amazing how anxiety-producing this is for some people. I had a student during the ebola pandemic that literally ceased being able to function. She wouldn't leave her dorm room and had to go back to Russia until the scare ended. Smart girl who really had her shit together, but totally lost it over a disease that had zero chance of overrunning Switzerland.

I have never been afraid of the virus, despite having to spend 2 months living out of a suitcase and being surrounded by thousands of chinese tourists, many of them from Wuhan. I think we can keep the numbers of dead down with common sense precautions and good medical interventions. My concern in the US is the same as it was in China, how might the government overreact to make things worse. I really don't trust Trump not to do anything insane. I could definitely see him closing the borders and placing people in quarantine involuntarily. That's why I'm still here. I'm concerned that if we go back to China we won't be able to get back to the US if things go south. Human action is much scarier than the virus, imho.

Trump went on FOX News and told people that he didn't believe the death rate, told people it was like the flu and that they can go to work with it.

People are gonna die.

it genuinely is so easy to express concern and urge caution yet is incapable of that. it is hard to believe a person like him exists. during the press conference yesterday, mike pence seemed sane and reasonable in comparison.

Read the trip insurance language closely. Now that COVID is a "known event", most policies probably won't cover flight cancellation based on the virus.

Coworker who I hang out with a decent amount outside of work is heading to Italy in three weeks. Don’t think I will get anywhere near him for a while when he gets back. Company should probably put him under mandatory quarantine when he gets back. Thankfully he works in our Malvern office and I am in Philly.

A woman who works in my sister's office was supposed to be going to Italy for a few weeks in May but has apparently entirely scrapped her trip until next year because of everything.

Saw a tweet that was concerning. It essentially noted that confirmed cases outside of China were recently 13K and that number had been doubling every 3 days. Noted that if that formula holds for 3 weeks we are at 1.7m confirmed cases. The trouble thing about the tweet was that it was "liked" by Sam Hinkie. The US number will eventually spike when we actually start testing at a commensurate level to countries with competent federal governments.

Every dollar they spend saving people's lives is one less dollar they can repurpose to build the wall. Get with the program.

Apparently we had a guy return from Italy and come straight to the office from the airport. Folks who work at that location are freaked out. Good news is that he flew to Atlanta the next day to see his sick elderly mother. Jackass.

It's here. Several schools in Bucks closed as some students there came in contact with a person who has a confirmed case.
