What am I missing?

That the Democrats are horrible at messaging and Rs are much, much better at it through McConnell, media personalities, Fox News, etc.
They're also catering to a morally bankrupt probably racist (whether they know it or not) demographic.

benghazi, emails, etc etc, just keep yelling and wasting time about the same "corrupt" things on the other side

Taking out Emergency Services for a minute and focusing on the schools I've always viewed the PA school district model is a broken model full of duplication.

Lancaster County is a good example as there is a school board, super superintendent, transportation services, etc. for each of its 16 districts. There were some shared services that I never understood as a student across Lancaster and Lennon, but other then that it seems like a lot of waste.

Flip that to where I live now and there are 17 High Schools in the country. It is unwieldy when there is weather because the edge at the west brushes the Appalachian Mountains where winter is very different then the East which is moderated by a big, wide bend in the Potomac. The problem shows up with snow and ice closures of the schools based on regional weather as we are dealing with 500 square miles. That seems solvable to split East and West.

Now overlay that on Emergency services and we have a county wide response. some towns have a town police force or volunteer fire house, but it is a unified response with a large capability from vehicle services to training to communications, etc. There are regional service areas assuring local needs have focus, but it is all part of the larger scheme. This seems to work very well.

So I am curious about PA school district model being more efficient then a county or regional emergency service team. Is it just better then what you have today?

yes, that last sentence applies

Don't see any downside to him. The Trumpists declared war on him as soon as he was a "yes" vote on witnesses.

Apparently his speech really tore into Trump. At least he has the bravery of his convictions.

A portion:

Romney said Trump is “guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust.”

He said what Trump did “was a flagrant assault on our electoral rights, our national security, and our fundamental values."

Romney added: "Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one's oath of office that I can imagine.”

He said he believed that his vote to convict Trump would be in the "minority" and Trump would not be found guilty.

"My vote will likely be in the minority in the Senate, but irrespective of these things, with my vote, I will tell my children and their children that I did my duty to the best of my ability believing that my country expected it of me," Romney said.

Since CPAC scorned him he's gone all rogue. Welcome John McCain version 2. A consistent and reliable vote for almost everything the GOP puts forward with an occasional bucking of the trend making him a "brave" wild card.

To be fair, I don't mind that at all. The label is sort of dumb, but at least I can respect the convictions. Just not being some rando whack-a-doodle cultist is refreshing.

Romney's vote to convict Trump on Article 1 puts one person in a very awkward position: his niece, and RNC chair, Ronna McDaniel. She's close to Trump and his campaign manager Brad Parscale, and speaks with both often. Trump regularly complains to her about her uncle.

Per one RNC insider: "Ronna Romney McDaniel better declare her uncle persona non grata or there will be a major push by Trumpers in the RNC to censure the junior senator from Utah and perhaps, just perhaps, oust her."

In an interview on Fox News that aired right after his announcement, Romney tells Chris Wallace he's spoken "a good deal" with his family because this decision will also have consequences for "my wife, my sons, my daughters-in-law and my 24 grandkids." Doesn't mention his niece.

Pretty remarkable from Mitt. All the Rs will hate him now. Trump is surely melting down on some WH toilet somewhere. I know it was the right vote for him to make but it will put him out the outs even moreso than he already was.

don't tease.

I think most people did not want to hear the BS and expected not much more then a normal day of tweeting. I did not bother listening. I was tempted but I feared I would just boil in anger and there was not good reason to do that to myself.

The counter is, of course, that his approval is as high as its ever been.

I'm sure he's upset his TV ratings are down, but that doesn't really mean anything at all in terms of reelction. Swing voters don't watch the state of the union, I'd bet

Acknowledging that this is the only 3rd time in history that we've done this but Romney is the first ever Senator to vote to convict/remove a President from his own political party.

I agree this probably doesn't matter all that much. But it also means that lots of voters are simply tired of the act. His dementia and self-praise have become boring or worse. If they aren't watching, he can't reach them. I would think most people find him unpleasant to watch or listen to. In 2016, Trump benefited from novelty, a compliant media that either couldn't figure out how to cover Trump or in fact really bought into the false equivalencies they continually promoted.

I more or less accept the poli sci idea that what really matters in a Presidential election are the underlying factors such as the economy and so forth. But in a close election, marginal differences matter. It may come down to something as stupid as "likeability" and while Bernie is not my cup of tea, pretty much any Democrat is more likable than DJT.
