BUT- if it had been covered- I probably would've taken the monday appointment and rented a car until then (lyft is good, but not very practical for fire calls). So I would've spent more money on the rental than I did on the parts. Not often that being just past warranty save you money.

Was this a matter of not knowing how easy the repair would be? Because given the savings and the fact that it took you probably less time that it would have taken you to get to the dealer and deal with a rental car seems to suggest fixing it yourself is the rational way to go. I'll do easy stuff myself, because it's easy and cheaper. And I guess I sort of enjoy doing it. Actually, I guess what I like is buying stuff from the auto parts store.
Though I won't change my own oil. Too messy and I really don't want to do anything that requires getting under the car.

there's a 5 house cul-de-sac off the bottom of my street. its about 450 feet from the start of the street to the farthest house (h/t google maps). Saw a parent waiting with their kid in their car yesterday for the school bus. beautiful weather, not cold, not hot, clear skies.
now with the possible exception of one of them having a bad wheel, why do you start your car and drive 300-400 feet instead of walking?
