One other Dem debate comment.

I have always been a fan of Joe Biden. I think he is a very good human being and has handled the tragedies in his life about as well as anyone could. I thought he was a great pick as VP for Obama, and I thoroughly enjoyed him destroying and embarrassing Paul Ryan in the 2012 VP debate.

That being said it is sad to watch him now. Those close to him who convinced him to run should be ashamed. He's not anywhere near as sharp mentally as he's been in the past and I would not be surprised at all if he had some type of medical episode like a mini-stroke in the last 2 years. Seeing him get attacked from all angles and struggling to defend himself is tough to watch.

I am not sure that Booker attacking Joe for bringing up Obama is super smart. Joe was part of the Obama WH for 8 years. It would the ridicules to pretend that Mr. Vice President spent 8 of the last 10 years roaming amongst the commoners of Christiana.

Joe Biden has wanted to be president his whole life. No one had to convince him to run. And it's not like he's some late stage dementia patient walking around. He doesn't have his best fastball anymore, but he's not out on the trail shitting himself.

Didn't watch, but to the extent any of them were trashing Obama, for shame. Also, stupid. Obama was the best thing to happen to the Democratic Party since FDR. He appealed to young people whose political consciousnesses were shaped during his presidency. He won two terms. He passed a major if not wholly satisfactory piece of health care legislation - more than anyone else had done.

He had his flaws. For an organizer he seemed oddly disinterested in building the kinds of personal relationships that can help you get stuff done. He probably gave into the banking class a little too much. Etc.

But MOST OF ALL, he served two essentially scandal-free terms and presided over a slow BUT RESPONSIBLE recovery that was going strong when he left office, and argued successfully for the auto bailouts. Democrats should talk about him like he descended from Heaven. They should be using their control of the House to propose naming shit after him. They should be doing all the things, in other words, that they did for JFK, who was a louse, and that Republicans did for Ronald Reagan, who, it turns out, could be awfully racist in the basest sort of terms.

If Obama was white the Democratic candidates would be calling him a racist for his immigration policies just like they have Biden.

It's amazing how much the party has changed since even 2016 let alone 2012. You are exactly right about Obama. He had be be furious watching them trash him last night.

Come on.............the Russia bullshit is such a red herring. Obama was 100% right about Russia when he dressed down Romney in 2012.

Putin has an uncanny ability to fool US Presidents--recall Bush's belief that he had looked into his heart, followed by Obama's reset. Both later realized how Putin was and is committed to undermining western liberal democracy and encouraging friendly authoritarians in the West. Now, with Trump, he is much closer to achieving that goal.

And I don't know why this isn't more widely reported--but the KGB has a long history of influencing US politics through various overt and covert means. Back in the 80s, it involved overt things like encouraging Marxism by funding entities like Monthly Review Press, subsidizing their books. They also infiltrated and funded various leftist organizations. Today, of course, they needn't both with the intellectual stuff, but they are surely doing a lot more than subsidizing the NRA--it would be shocking if Russian money and influence weren't involved in a number of political entities (I'd include the Green Party here) that are undermining our political process. I would also be surprised if Russian money weren't largely behind the Anti-vax movement and similar as well.

I don't think it's so much that Biden has lost his fastball (maybe 5% that) as it is that he's not very good at campaigning in general and that format last night in particular. That's why his presidential campaigns in '88 and '08 went sideways. The aforementioned undressing of Paul Ryan was much better suited to his strengths, as 1) it allowed him to lean in to his folksy demeanor, as he wasn't running for the top job; 2) he was defending someone else's record, not his own; and 3) the optics of him playing attack dog versus a white male Republican in a general election are very different than him going after a woman or person of color in a Democratic primary.

There were some candidates last night — not many, but a few — who would betray their own mothers if they thought it would get them an inch closer to the nomination. Instead of helping them, though, criticizing Obama’s Presidency to try to hurt Biden did nothing to help their candidacies. Instead it looked contrived and petty, hurting both their own chances and the overall chances of defeating Trump in 2020.
