Biden our Time until 2020 - Politics Thread

Does anyone else think that the fact that the debate set looks like a game show set says everything there is to say about the media and the debates? (I am not watching them, and I don't really see why anyone does, unless they find that kind of thing and the ridiculous commentary afterwards entertaining.)

Debates seem pretty outdated, you'd think they would come up with a better format, especially when you have so many people.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the argument that the federal courts do not have an interest in how Congressional maps can be drawn, where free and fair elections and access is clearly under the umbrella of federal oversight.

is it possible to say that gerrymandering is both a hugely important and also a hugely overrated problem in politics? I freely admit to oscillating between those positions and holding both positions in my head at the same time.

Not that Kyle is a political scientist, but he plays one sometimes, and think that's a pretty concise summary. It matters in some outcomes, but its impact is often overrated. You could switch to a computer drawing districts tomorrow, and most districts would still be uncompetitive, polarization wouldn't be fixed, and many states would have delegations that are 'unfair' based on total votes. Every state adopting an independent redistricting commission that drew lines ignoring political data and where incumbents lived would make things better but wouldn't be a silver bullet to fix American politics.

And federal courts have an interest in how Congressional maps can be drawn. They require that districts are drawn to be of equal population, and they have intervened regularly for the past few decades on issues involving race. They haven't historically intervened on partisan gerrymanders, and today's decision just continues that.

The case has drawn criticism from abortion rights groups

You're telling me! This sounds like something you would hear coming out of a Middle Eastern theocracy.

Also PA didn't pass the budget today, even though they should have. Failed in the house bc of school code compulsory age.

Lawyers, man. I can't imagine being the prosecutor in this.

That said, I am interested to hear what the grand jury was told.

Eh. It's a awful format. People are yelling. He was already way over. I'd imagine they're waving at him to shut up.

People over on Redstate are supportive of the prosecutor here. Because of course, this has nothing to do with life, but with control and punishment of women.
