Election week: Blue wave or blue balls? (Politics)

If you don't think giving blacks the right to vote is not even a dent, then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm not naive to think that racism wasn't still a problem. But I didn't think we'd have a blatantly racist President whose behavior is at the very least tolerated by a lot of people in this country.

It just feels like we've taken 50 steps back.

Interrupting the election talk to note that I had no idea Philly's current DA was such a big deal nationally.

In the last four days he's been in my face through glowing reports in the New Yorker

New York times Magazine

And Samantha Bee

Samantha Bee at least had the good sense to have him sign an Eric Schneiderman clause jsut in case he turns out to be a mountebank (love to use that word whenever I can) or scoundrel.

I appreciate Michael Cohen's candor but Trump has spent the last 22 months proving what we all already knew - that he is a racist, misogynistic, sexual assaulting, lying POS. Nearly half the country voted for him anyway.

What a brave soul Cohen is to come out with this after turning the other way and suffering for so many years on Trump’s payroll.

seriously, he got caught and is now trying to save his reputation. He talked to the lawyer of the guy who stood up to Nixon after helping Nixon (I forget his name, but I read an article about Cohen meeting with him). Anyway, Cohen is just trying to come out looking decent after having no problem being the fixer for one of the worst humans on the planet.

Hard to know what those early vote numbers mean for sure, but it seems like they're a good sign.

That right to vote's been actively suppressed from the start.

The Presidency has obviously gone backwards. The only other change is some people feel empowered to show their true self. They felt the same before Trump and will feel the same after.

The other change is smart phones and social media sheds a light on stuff that people of color have been saying all along happens to them

Tanzania:
Paul Makonda, regional commissioner for Dar es Salaam, made the request on Monday, pledging that a special team would “get their hands on them” next week. By Tuesday, he said he had already received 5,763 messages from the public, with more than 100 names.

A 17-member committee will also be established to identify gay people on social media and arrest them.

Many LGBT activists, who fear violent attacks from police and members of the public, have either fled their area or remain shut in their homes.

“Every gay person is living in fear. Even the parents of gay children are also living in great fear,” said Geofrey Mashala, a Tanzanian LGBT activist now living in California.

Erin Kilbride, media and visibility coordinator for the human rights group Front Line Defenders, said violence by police is common. Of 80 LGBT people and sex workers Kilbride interviewed over the summer, all but two said they had been sexually assaulted or raped by police in custody. One female sex worker told Front Line Defenders she had been forced by police to crawl through sewage in Mwanza.

Gay male sex is punishable by up to 30 years in jail, a legacy of British colonial-era laws. Over recent years, a crackdown on LGBT communities has led to the closure of organisations supporting gay people, and a ban on the distribution of lubricants through HIV programmes. Last year, the Tanzanian president, John Magufuli, said “even cows” disapprove of homosexuality.

Sounds like the president seduced a straight cow.

CAN TAYLOR SWIFT SWING TENNESSEE?

50-50 with Taylor Swift going door to door in Tennessee.

The Dems will give her the Medal of Honor if she swings Tenn.

The polls are turning BLUE.

Without the KKK factor, this Senatorial blue wave would be certain.

Some guy just made an interesting point on MSNBC regarding high turnout. He said we're focusing on states like GA, FL, etc., and rightfully so but he said to look at states like NC.

This year, in NC, there's no gubernatorial, senate, or presidential races but there's still higher turnout than 2014. What is motivating these people?

One thing when you're looking at 2014 as the baseline - nationally turnout sucked, and the 2014 turnout in a lot of states with big races this year had legitimately abysmal turnout then. For example Indiana, Texas, and Nevada each had under 30% of their voting eligible populations vote as there weren't any competitive races (sorry Wendy Davis). So turnout in those states would need to go up like 30% relative to 2014 just to hit what the shitty national turnout level was in 2014 and would need to go up almost 50% to hit what average national turnout was in 2010.

Not to deny turnout this year looks like it will be very high for a midterm & looks like it will be so in such a way that helps Dems, but there's a lot of "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THIS COMPARED TO 2014!" going on without the context of just how low a bar that is to clear.

Based on people who are in my life, I'd say they're much more aware of the election this year whereas in prior years, midterm elections weren't even on their minds. That's a big difference right there.

Another difference is the fact that I've actually had conversations with people about down ballot races, something I can say I've never done in the past. It feels like people, primarily Dems, are much more interested in local races this year.
