Actually, the Republican Party and the conservative/populist movement globally are working to undermine the liberal democratic enlightenment consensus that lies at the root of the American founding. The elimination of the middle class, attacks on the franchise and the legitimacy of elections generally, the attack on science, the selective application of basic civil liberties to some but not others, the celebration of law enforcement and violence, the embrace of evangelism--it's all of a piece. There are some real scuzz bucket intellectuals who serve as lap dogs to all this--Bryan Caplan for one is a guy who has explicitly argued that we should make it more difficult for people to get an education, one of the cornerstones of democracy and there are others who have always been hostile to The Enlightenment.

Now, you my think McConnell and certainly Trump are too stupid to get this (but Tom Cotton, likely under the influence is Harvey Mansfield while at Harvard isn't) but there has clearly been a ton of money spent promoting these very views, undermining our democracy.

Pittsburgh police detectives will report for duty with riot gear Thursday, in anticipation of a potential large scale protest should President Trump decide to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Well isn't that something.

Quinnipiac has Cruz up only 3 points. 47 to 44% that is crazy, even thought I detest Cruz, it seems hard to fathom.

Do they know something the rest of us don't? Is there a rumor going 'round?

Rumor is Trump told them to be ready. Who knows if that is true.

Statement from Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich:

“The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police receives information daily that we evaluate and prepare for if the event should occur. Events can include anything from extreme weather to potential demonstrations.

“Often the events we prepare for do not occur. However, through an abundance of caution, we attempt to adequately prepare for an appropriate response.

“We receive information regularly about potential events and/or threats, assess the credibility of the information and plan for a potential event. In this case, we have not assessed the credibility of the potential for disturbances, and we do not have any knowledge of the President’s decision-making process.”

State lawmakers have been debating all session how to get back at Memphis for removing the statues last December. Many were angered that Memphis officials circumvented a state law designed to protect Confederate memorials, by selling the parks the statues were in to a nonprofit.

Trevor Noah nailed Trump not being able to keep the secret about the secret meeting. Hilarious. I have not found the clip yet, but will share. Its a visual video take.

Tuesday was also quality when he threw out about Hanity: He “minimize his connection to Michael Cohen like it means nothing, especially when every other day of the year he’s the guy who can bake a conspiracy cake out of nothing more than an egg and the word ‘Hillary.’”
