I thought it was great.

I'd probably rank them...

SideshowBob wrote:I don't fully understand the hate. Certainly had some things I didn't like and can criticize, but overall a solid film and enjoyable. I feel like they took the criticism about The Force Awakens to heart and, instead of being predictable, was actually somewhat subversive about what one might expect the film (or a Star Wars film in general) to be about.

I think I liked The Force Awakens better, but the Last Jedi is so different from any other Star Wars film that it's a bit hard to compare. I definitely enjoyed TLJ much more than Rogue One but I'm one of those people who thinks Rogue One is just okay.

It pains me to say it, but the Star Wars fandom is one of the most juvenile and bipolar fandoms out there, partly because it's so damn big. Everything is the worst or greatest thing ever. But anything that deviates from their childhood memories of what Star Wars is supposed to be (or at least what that has turned into over the past 3-4 decades) must be lashed out at. It turns into a feeding frenzy that is just plain ugly to watch. They don't want to hear that a SW film was good but imperfect, or entertaining but uneven, or surprising and different... if it's not EXACTLY what they expect or have built up in their mind to want, they get filled with rage.

For example, a guy that I work with is a huge SW fan. He HATED the film. As in, still angry about it today after seeing it Thursday night. What did he want? He wanted Luke Freaking Skywalker to kill Kylo and Snoke and be the Bad Guy for Ep IX. He thought that would be "really cool." Yeah, that was never going to happen, bud. How do you even argue with that? Does that make his opinion of the film less valid? Well, no... it's how he felt about a work of art. As long as he's not basing his opinion on incorrect information, it's still a valid opinion. But it would've made an objectively worse SW film and created a worse experience for the overwhelming majority of other fans.

And sadly, there's a ton of SW fans who simply cannot accept females and minorities in the major roles (if you don't believe, check out the backlash against Chuck Wendig for daring to have lesbian characters in his Aftermath books).

That being said, it got an A through CinemaScore, which is the post-viewing survey service used by Hollywood. http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/12/16/star-wars-the-last-jedi-cinemascore-revealed And there is increasing evidence that the Rotten Tomatoes scores are due to review bomb attacks. https://www.polygon.com/2017/12/18/16792184/star-wars-the-last-jedi-rotten-tomatoes-review-bomb Contrast it with the IMDB ratings, for example.

And this story's thesis is more than a bit conspiratorial for my taste, but it does have some anecdotal evidence about the exact type of dark corner of the SW fandom that I was referencing. There are legit Nazis and white supremacists who see no irony in being a fan of the trilogy that named its bad guys as "Stormtroopers."

Can't even dislike a movie anymore without being associated with Nazis.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

You're pretty salty about this topic. Can't tell if you're joking at this point. If not, then :ce:

I do admit I've gotten a little frustrated reading repeated reviews that seem to associate criticisms of a movie with some sort of personality disorder. (Not that these other seedy issues aren't also present to some extent in some people) Sort of a strange position that I'm not used to. But I understand that I've made my point and will ease up about it, especially ITT.

You're lumping in your own evidence-based (albeit subjective) conclusions compared to the junk that gets spewed on Twitter. Check out the crap that has been endlessly thrown at many of the SW writers, bloggers, and podcasters who have spoken in favor of the film on Twitter, then check out the Twitter profile of those same trolls... you'll see a pattern.

I feel bad, because I've interacted with some of those people off and on over the past few years, and they're always incredibly nice, genuine people. I know it bothers them.

I was watching this amazing piece of editing this morning, and I was really enjoying it. Then I got to the end and saw my friend’s name next Topher Grace (who is getting all the credit). I nearly dropped my phone.

Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

Not in love with the title as of now, though it will probably make more sense once I see it.

Also, holy crap the Emperor.

Yawn. I’m still bitter over The Last Jedi, have no expectation for this one. Title sucks. Emperor has been dead for 60 years but now hes back? Cmon
