Trailer does it's job of selling the movie.

Whoa, will have to look into that.

I mean, is SW kind of a dying property? Not sure the kids give a flying fuck. Solo was a financial disappointment. Unclear to me anyway what else can be done with it. I mean you can crank out this or that "Star Wars" story but that always felt forced - ahem - to me, and it seems like more and more people agree with that sentiment. No one, but one will care about a "Star Wars" story to do with the characters from the new trilogy; outside of Rey and Darth Adam Driver, they are all poorly drawn and useless. So you'd have to be milking the OT cow or maybe you could do a Darth Maul movie, since everyone agrees he was underutilized.

The most interesting remaining stories to do IMHO would actually be filling in the blanks George sort of carelessly left in the prequel movies, like Jedi Master Sifodius or however you spell that, Darth Plagus, rise of Palpatine as a Sith-trained anti-Jedi, etc. And almost all of these would be adult-audience movies, because of the necessary subject matter.

And of limited interest.

they just built two large additions to both disney theme parks. i doubt it is going away anytime soon.

and didnt ep 7 make a ton of money?

solo did blow. especially because it made no sense regarding who han was. he was like this bad ass who became a rebel fighter in the original movies but that also happened in solo basically? so he lived his same arc twice?

Solo was also not a good movie. Rogue One was a good movie and it did quite well. Obviously it also came first but I think people would be willing to see some more unconventional Star Wars films. Not exactly Thor Ragnarok unconventional, but there is certainly room to grow.

You may be right, but the more unconventional you go, while probably bringing something at least new and perhaps even of robust quality to the franchise, you also probably see declining interest as unconventional tends to turn off a lot of people. But American cinema needs a shake up - badly - so maybe this is the way to go, if continuing the franchise is the most important thing.

Personally I think it's time for a round two of the 1970s thing where Hollywood studios admitted they were out of ideas and clueless about what the public wanted, and so handed the keys to any UCLA film school grad with a predictably maudlin twenty-something angst-ridden student movie, a weird persona, and a good beard. Let's see what the kids can do when given budgets and asked to use their imagi-fucking-nations, not produce endless comic book movies and reboots of popular 80s things.

That is, after all, how we got Star Wars in the first place.

think part of it is that a lot of that creativity is in television these days.

I hope The Mandalorian restores some of that Star Wars good feeling.

Think about it, TLJ is extremely split (I didn’t like it), Solo was a flop, people were super pissed about the micro transactions in the last video game.

They can have a real wave of good publicity if Ep 9 is good, the video game (which looks amazing) is a hit and that all starts with The Mandalorian. The last quarter of this year has a huge effect on the future of Star Wars imo

Yeah, you're right. TV has caught up to movies thanks to the digital age, in a few important ways: for a relatively modest amount of money, it is possible to have a functional home theater, with a surround sound system and a pretty damn big television that is a wide screen; and digital effects have made convincing-looking special effects, particularly set in space, within a TV show's budget to produce; and streaming services have dramatically increased the money available for TV in the first place. All of this makes TV the perfect space for the new, the exciting, and the risky; movies cost so much anymore that they almost have to have built-in audiences in order to minimize the risk of catastrophic losses.

This I find depressing, because a good movie is still a helluva thing.

Maybe it is time to ask: are movies, at least fictional, non-documentary movies, as a form, a dying breed? Is the future all serialized world-building now?

right now you could go to a theater and see a new movie from Almodovar, Joon-ho, Tarantino, Lee, Eggers, Soderbergh... science fiction, horror, historical drama, regular old drama, plus a whole host of big studio fare from Hustlers to It and so on. not really seeing the brain drain

yeah, as others smarter and more observant than I am have noted, movies aren't really disappearing, but there is a hole in the middle. art house fare is still out there, and big blockbusters, but not mid-level dramas and comedies of moderate aims, both financially and artistically. . This has a lot more to do with how movies are released these days, with no chance to build box office by word of mouth, than any brain drain. If you want to look at it positively, a lot of the people who would have worked on these mid-level films can now find employment in television.
