I didn’t care much for TFA. It wasn’t bad, but it lifted too much from the original movie without actually building on the story in my opinion. Rogue One was alright, but that kind of made its way towards the climax using some dramatic plot points that felt unearned.

Is this movie good? I’m not hyped for it, but I’m going to see it eventually.

Right now, it is only has a 63% audience review score on Rotten Tomato but 93% critic review score.

No way. The film was many things, but definitely not "meh." It's a roller coaster ride. Rian Johnson makes some really bold choices--some of which will be controversial--but there's nothing underwhelming about the film.

And for the record, I really enjoyed it. It was the most memorable SW viewing experience I've ever had. It'll take additional viewings to know for sure how I feel about it.

TFA, on the other hand, was the film where I walked out the first time feeling underwhelmed.

Now that's just dumb. The porgs are tangential. It's not like we're talking about Ewoks here.

I'll have to think on it a little more but my initial impression was that it was pretty disappointing. Especially relative to these phenomenal reviews it's getting.

Critics expect less from a Star Wars than audiences do

I thought it was pretty fun and awesome. But I'm not a Star Wars fan boy or anything.

I get the impression that a lot of people don't like it because it they were expecting a redo of ESB

That would be the worst thing it could be.

I don't fully understand the hate. Certainly had some things I didn't like and can criticize, but overall a solid film and enjoyable. I feel like they took the criticism about The Force Awakens to heart and, instead of being predictable, was actually somewhat subversive about what one might expect the film (or a Star Wars film in general) to be about.

I think I liked The Force Awakens better, but the Last Jedi is so different from any other Star Wars film that it's a bit hard to compare. I definitely enjoyed TLJ much more than Rogue One but I'm one of those people who thinks Rogue One is just okay.
