Roll Tide Roll. If the unqualified for senate Sessions hadn't been promoted into a position he was even less qualified for, Moore would remain in obscurity

So I said this goes further than I'd go, would like to draw that out a bit.

I disagree pretty strongly with the idea of expelling him if he wins. My central concern is about senators overturning the will of Alabama's voters, who at this point cannot be said to be ignorant of these allegations. Although Roy Moore is a total piece of shit, if he wins more votes, he's a duly elected senator. Voters need to be the ones who draw the line of where "he's a gross, bigoted asshole" gets drawn, even if they appear to suck at it at the moment. Senators picking and choosing who is 'ethical' enough to be a senator without a bright line of being convicted of a crime (or even charged with one) seems anti-democratic to me even if it doesn't lead to widespread abuse. He won't be convicted of a crime. It's not something he'd have been accused of after assuming office. If voters elect him in spite of the news coverage, he should be seated and not expelled.

The notional reason for him being expelled would be his conduct ~30-40 years ago that is gross. The only reason it'd have any chance of happening is he's a piece of shit and the entire institutional party hates him, so there's no one to defend him. Like, if this was coming out about Luther Strange, there would be no debate about not seating him. And we've had senators in recent memory accused of doing or confirmed to have done worse. I don't know opening the door to randomly expelling senators, especially if they are pariahs within their parties, is something we should do.

Would be interested in reading an argument on why this is *different* and Moore should be expelled if he's elected.

So, how does ousting pedophiles = randomly expelling?

If Anthony Weiner ran for Senate, was elected, and the Senate kicked him out for his behavior from his past, would we think that was a proper use of this Senate power? Or would it only be appropriate if some new Weiner weiner scandal came out after the election? Jersey is saying the latter.

I'm eagerly awaiting Cruz's stance, because no one likes him. :)

I think I agree with jh in the sense that it could be abused. It's clear that this guy should be booted, but the next one may not be so clear. Where is the line exactly? Normalizing congress getting rid of people it doesn't like could potentially disenfranchise people from states with unpopular opinions or ideas.

The United States is providing de-facto cover for Islamic State units in Syria and only pretending to fight terrorism in the Middle East, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry said the U.S. air force had tried to hinder Russian strikes on Islamic State militants around the Syrian town of Albu Kamal.

“These facts are conclusive evidence that the United States, while imitating an uncompromising fight against international terrorism for the global community, in fact provides cover for Islamic State units,” the defense ministry said.

He should not be a United States senator, no matter what it takes," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
And Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who's not seeking re-election after criticizing Trump, said he'd "vote for the Democrat" if he were an Alabaman and had to choose between Moore and Democrat Doug Jones.

this is what you do to combat Moore if you're a Republican. I'm not sure much Flake's opinion goes in Alabama, but if it gets one person, it's good.

i'm probably closer to jerseyhoya on this; the GOP voters of Alabama has nominated Moore. That's on them. It's now on all of Alabama's voters to say NO. If they don't, they want Roy Moore to represent them; they had Jeff Sessions, an avowed racist who failed to pass out of committee to be a federal judge, represent them for 20 years. That's utterly pathetic and beyond the pale...except for the fact that Donald Trump is our current president, we've had past presidents with all sorts of allegations and we've had terrible people represent all sorts of areas of our country. VOTE AGAINST HIM. If you're a Republican, vote for Doug Jones. If you're a republican politician, tell people to vote Doug Jones.

sigh

Russia is using this to further prop up Assad and also does not care about 'fighting terrorism' in the Middle east.

Syria is a no-win situation and always has been.

Lewandowski is twisting things into complex pretzels about the purity of the Trump campaign on CNN. Its impressive.

Carter Page is a nobody, he was never at anything, Trump doesn't know him, he is not part of anything, and did not show up to work. He can do whatever he wants as a private citizen. Can't reconcile Clovis directing Page, so goes with a topic change to Obama! (Obama spoke at that very same [geographic] place once)

Don Jr is a private citizen, so whatever he did is out of the campaign, and administration's control.

Wikileaks is Obama's problem because it happened on his watch.

Hiring a Mi-6 spy in unheard of.

Needed to walk away (breakfast in hand).

Its what they run in the buildings cafe. Swaps to Fox sometime mid-morning. Because they are so slow to serve their captive audience it is the only way to pass the time. I could lay an egg before the guy makes it. Everything is MTO. I think they could spend a little time training at Wawa or Sheetz to improve the experience massively.

the Whitefish scam:
SAN JUAN — The small energy outfit from Montana that won a $300 million contract to help rebuild Puerto Rico’s tattered power grid had few employees of its own, so it did what the Puerto Rican authorities could have done: It turned to Florida for workers.

For their trouble, the six electrical workers from Kissimmee are earning $42 an hour, plus overtime. The senior power linemen from Lakeland are earning $63 an hour working in Puerto Rico, the Florida utility said. Their 40 co-workers from Jacksonville, also linemen, are making up to $100 earning double time, public records show.

But the Montana company that hired the workers, Whitefish Energy Holdings, had a contract that allowed it to bill the Puerto Rican public power company, known as Prepa, $319 an hour for linemen, a rate that industry experts said was far above the norm even for emergency work — and almost 17 times the average salary of their counterparts in Puerto Rico.

The Whitefish case has already influenced Puerto Rico’s recovery: President Trump agreed to increase aid to the island — but only if the Puerto Rican government does a better job of estimating costs. “We have a lot of work to do when it comes to grant-monitoring at all levels of government,” Brock Long, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told Congress recently, vowing not to commit “one dollar” to the Whitefish deal.

The Whitefish contract has been particularly problematic.

The Army Corps of Engineers, which is overseeing power restoration in Puerto Rico, did not hire Whitefish because its prices were more than double what the agency considered reasonable, according to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Jacksonville Electric Authority said it had billed Whitefish for additional overhead to cover things like administrative costs and insurance, bringing the bill to about half what Whitefish was charging Prepa. A spokeswoman for Jacksonville Electric said she was not concerned about the markup because Whitefish was also handling food and lodging. (However, Whitefish is also charging Prepa another $412 a day per worker for food and lodging.)

They say they have the votes:
The Senate tax-writing committee began hammering out the details of its tax cut proposal on Monday. The House may vote on its bill as soon as Thursday. Here are the latest developments, updated throughout the day:

The chief House tax writer says he’s confident the chamber has enough Republican votes to pass its tax legislation this week.

There may be minor revisions to the bill, but that would be the extent of it, according to House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady.

A new study by Congress’s official tax scorekeeper suggests that in 2019, households earning $1 million a year or more would get an average tax cut of about $58,000, while those earning between $50,000 and $75,000 would see an average tax cut of about $688.

I feel reformed
