finished watching Burns' Vietnam documentary.

Kinda glad there was no breakout thread about it.

He's got a good eye for telling images and video, and long stretches of interviews with John Musgrave & Philadelphia-area guys Ron Ferrizzi and Bill Ehrhart are not to be missed. Unfortunately in the end, Burns is an unimaginative, insipid, appeasing synthesizer of his topics.

Vietnam is a subject that has eluded much more talented storytellers than Burns. His plodding, "first this military event, then that one", Peter Coyote gravely intoning some now-insignificant factoid side by side with recitation of some truly mind-curdling facts...and Trent Reznor deciding Let It Be is the musical grace note to end it with, ffs? 9-Inch Fails, more like

He spoke at my college graduation and was really fucking boring. I've watched the first 7 of these things though and think it's pretty interesting/informative. Lot of stuff I had not heard previously.

Don't take this the wrong way, but sure his footage is informative if you're not particularly well informed, or weren't alive then. Its educational potential is certainly valuable, but I'd wager few of your age-group peers are as engaged as you & as willing to endure Burns turgid narrative style

I guess I have to agree/disagree. It's educational potential is certainly valuable. I'm reasonably well-informed and was alive during much of the era, but still found a lot of stuff I had not heard previously, though granted mostly in the earlier episodes. Entertaining is probably not the word, but it was easy to take and interesting, particularly in half hour doses. I'm glad I watched it and I don't know of a more comprehensive and interesting visual overview of the era, so I'm glad it got made and other people can and will watch it. I'm really not sure if the rhetoric and effects had been heated up that it would be so effective.

Is there something you would recommend over it?

here's the other Republican who wants to unseat Tom Wolf for Governor:
WYOMISSING, PA
Many who gathered at the Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery on Monday said that they didn't know much about Republican gubernatorial candidate Paul Mango.

Mango, 58, was introduced by Berks County Commissioner Christian Y. Leinbach, who has endorsed him.

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Mango was a paratrooper during his military career. He later became a management consultant and worked in the health care sector in different countries.

His jobs platform includes stronger leadership and better policies on taxes and regulations.

Concerning health care, he said people have informed him that they can't pay their insurance premiums if they go up another 20 percent.

"A woman told me the other day it (her monthly premium) now exceeds her mortgage payment. And that's before the deductible," Mango said.

To address health care, Mango said that as governor he would take a block grant if offered by the federal government and work with experts to customize a system specifically for Pennsylvanians.

He also defined bright spots in the state, including strength in the natural gas industry, and life-changing studies at universities that are producing artificial intelligence, drug-research breakthroughs and innovative cancer treatments.

Mango asked how the negatives and positives can coexist.

He blames the governor.

"We do not have chief executive who is leading Pennsylvania," Mango said. "The central problem we are facing is a complete lack of leadership in our governor today."

Mango defined goals that he believes are attainable, including growing the state economy by 4 or 5 percent a year; eradicating drug overdoses; ensuring students graduate prepared for meaningful work; and helping health care to be affordable and accessible.

Pennsylvania is officially losing population. If we just had a stronger leader he could probably attain 10% growth.

DjT gave himself a thumbs up on the response to the devastation caused by Maria as he was leaving D.C. He will stay in the capital of PR, so it is not likely that he will have any sense what the more remote parts of the island are going through, or have been faced with.

Side note: people need to learn what decimate means. The press is as guilty as the non-english speaking president.

well actually the original term means to destroy/kill by one tenth (hence the deci prefix)

think the original term started when the Roman army would purposely kill one out of every ten civilians when they conquered a land

but colloquially it has become to mean destroy a large part of something

From CNN:

11:40 a.m. ET: Air Force One just touched down in San Juan, where they will spend the day:
Next: Trump and the first lady will attend a briefing first.
1:15 p.m. ET: The two will meet victims of Hurricane Maria.
1:50 p.m. ET: President Trump and Melania attend Cavalry Chapel.
3:30 p.m. ET: Trump will meet with Gov. Kenneth Mapp of US Virgin Islands.
4:10 p.m. ET: POTUS and FLOTUS participate in a greeting with Navy and Marine Corps.
5:05 p.m. ET: Air Force One departs for Washington.

Spend the day?!?!? Try spend the afternoon. One of his rounds of golf takes longer than he is going to spend in Puerto Rico.
Of course, he was sure to make time to talk about a completely unrelated topic and throw shade at Obama:

Trump’s brief sit-down with Puerto Rico and cabinet officials touched on varying topics from thanking Linda McMahon, administrator of the Small Business Administration, to the “hundreds of millions of dollars worth of airplanes for the Air Force” that were ordered.

“As you probably heard, we cut the price very substantially something that other administrations would never have done," Trump said. "That I can tell you."

It was a punishment for the Roman legions to punish the whole unit for crimes like desertion or mutiny.
