15 out of 39 from last year's roster according to Hockey Reference. By Trump math, that's more than half!

Soldiers can't pick and choose where they are deployed. That's up to the President et al.

I went through the post Vietnam war disdain for SSAM. Thanking soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines is is a good thing to do In my view. Civilians make the decisions regarding what the military will do. The military always does its best to accomplish the mission.

i don't get how this became some big thing that it's required that teams stand at attention for it

i don't remember doing this in sports outside of little league

Hate to share a link that credits Stephen A. Smith, but apparently until 2009, players would stay in the locker room until after the anthem had been played.. Then someone decided the mage had to be reworked.

I do have to believe that a society where being a soldier is the most honored profession and a military leader the most respected is headed for trouble. We've seen enough of those through history to know that's true. We're not there, but we're tending that way, though often it's just as much due to degradation of other career options as military boosterism. Doctors still get a little cred, though not nearly as much as before, and teachers get some lip service, though no one wants to be one. Making a zillion dollars is still tops on the list, I'm pretty sure.

That said, today's world needs soldiers and god bless the people who take on this difficult and dangerous job. Not really analogous, but I know a guy who works for Wells Fargo who is probably the most decent guy I know. Am I supposed to spit on him because I find their business practices execrable, yet he's still out there earning money through them to support his family including his adopted disabled child?

Civilian criticism of military policies is absolutely necessary, since they're supposedly acting out the will of the people. Disdain toward the people who do the job says a lot more about the person who can't generate respect for a fellow human.
