I think I pissed off a 12 year old the other day. some kid with what I assume was a boy scout uniform was chasing me down asking for something while leaving the store. I was busy on my phone and just waved him off telling him "I don't want any cookies, today." I swear under his breath he told me fuck you and gave me the finger under the radar. didn't phase me cause the girl scouts do that to me all the time. this time however I forgot they don't sell cookies. I think he was trying to get donations for hurricane relief victims. I felt bad and haven't returned to that store.

well i can kind of understand it. i dont know what they are posting on twitter or reddit or wherever you are reading, but yeah. boy scouts for me was a father/son thing. i think that is important still. i think it is important for boys to have a place to do those things with other boys too.

I was a scout. Merit badges were a drag. So I didn't rank very high, 1st Class. Actually, that sounds pretty good. First Class. Not bad.

I was a scout, but never made Eagle. Topped out at Life. Went to Philmont. There were girls there. It wasn't a problem.

I found scouting valuable. I think there are lots of reasons boys participate in scouting--some, like me, were most interesting in the backpacking and outdoor activities, and not really into merit badges and awards. Others find other things valuable. I do think the Eagle Scout is one of the few real achievements available to boys who may not have exceptional athletic or academic prowess but have well above average persistence and initiative. Many scouts who may not have a father involved in his life found scouting to provide opportunities to do father/son things they wouldn't otherwise get to do. The strength of scouting in my opinion really depends almost entirely on the scoutmaster.

While I'm not really upset by it, I think having girls in scouting will make a big difference, and I'm not sure it's entirely positive.

I really do think the adult leadership of BSA has been wrong about almost everything, probably in part because of the huge Mormon influence on scouting. BSA took positions on divisive social issues when it really did not need to.

He got burnt out over the politics thread IIRC. He also said he was too busy to post anymore in like August 2016, so who knows. He last visited this board (while signed it at least) in January.

Finding out a bit more about this scouting thing--it looks like at the Cub Scout level (I was never a Cub Scout) the dens will be single sex. They haven't decided what to do about the Boy Scout level. Explorers have been co-ed for quite a while.

It seems the idea is to create an organization that gives girls the outdoor experience that I guess aren't really a big part of Girl Scouts. And I guess to bulk up the numbers--I'd imagine maintaining properties like Philmont and the various camps and such is pretty costly and if you're seeing declining numbers you need to do something--either close down properties or cut back on programs or increase costs or get more kids in the door.

Hey Cal--did you ever apply for a job with either the local council or BSA? Seems like it might be a really good fit for you.

Cal, what camp did you go to when you were scouting? We are going to Ware in a few weeks.

Horseshoe. Right across the river. Been to Ware a bunch of times though. I'd imagine you'll end up at Horseshoe at some point. It is the big summer camp spot for Cheater County.

Scouts was ok, but it was pretty brutal and awful in middle school. Lots of bullying from the older guys.

My friend's dad just retired from Chester County Council. I don't think it is something I would want to do. Too many awful parents.

Since coming to the Chester County Council, I have to say that everyone I’ve met, granted it’s a small number, one pack and two troops, everyone has been really nice, but after being involved in powder mill in DE, this doesn’t surprise me unfortunately. I saw embarrassing behavior by parents at round table. One guy, who was an Eagle Scout, didn’t show up at meetings for like 6 months, then came and was pissed at some of the decisions that had been made at the meetings he didn’t attend, threw a fit and loudly walked out. Unreal how people act

Not surprisingly, I don't remember going above Second Class. Camping and hiking I liked, not so much standing at attention in the school parking lot on a Wednesday evening. When my Scoutmaster* threw me off a bridge, I figured it was a sign.

But maybe Second Class was above First Class? Yeah, sure, that's the ticket.

*Boy Scout trivia. My Scoutmaster was the brother of Chuck Hughes, the only NFL player to die on the field (as far as I know.)
