1. Trump hoped Comey would let it go.

2. Comey didn't.

3. Comey was fired for not letting it go.

4. Trump explains on television the reason he fired Comey was because of the Russia investigation.

5. Comey wrote it all down.

Comey's love letters are not the major issue I see in the above chain of events.
