Their reasoning is the FAA is still using "radar based technology" and NextGen has taken too long, which is incorrect. It sounds good in the media but it's completely false. ERAM has been deployed nationwide for at least 5 years now and is used 24/7 is all control centers. The old system called HOST has been offline since 2015.

ERAM is GPS based through ADS-B broadcasts (you can build your own receiver on Raspberry Pi) but the airlines refuse to spend any money on the transponders for their domestic fleet. ADS-B is already equipped for most international flights since many countries require it.

The two parties pushing for this are the airlines and the union. The union has been pushing it since the day Reagan fired everyone. The union fights everything, so they'll just end up fighting the airlines instead of the FAA. The commercial airlines, sans Delta, just want complete control. At least Delta knows this will be a huge cost to air travelers safety and wallet.

To give you an idea that GPS is already in use in most of the world, including the US, the yellow aircraft icons are using ADS-B:

I'll have to ask my brother what he thinks about this idea? He works ATC at a facility in the southeast.

His union has been pushing it for years. The real problem was giving Lockheed Martin the bulk of the NextGen contracts who charge $10,000 per line of code.

I keep seeing headlines like this:

Trump’s latest unhinged tweetstorm could hasten his downward spiral

In this case the media needs to get their head out of their own bubble, because it ain't ever happening. In the beginning you had a president who would never admit wrongdoing, now you have almost an entire GOP who couldn't possibly stand the idea of winning the lighthouse only to Lose It by their own admission. The president himself can seemingly get out of any and every situation he gets himself into , mostly by exclamation, and most often by tweet for which he's never held accountable.
yawn

TOP-SECRET NSA REPORT DETAILS RUSSIAN HACKING EFFORT DAYS BEFORE 2016 ELECTION

RUSSIAN MILITARY INTELLIGENCE executed a cyberattack on at least one U.S. voting software supplier and sent spear-phishing emails to more than 100 local election officials just days before last November’s presidential election, according to a highly classified intelligence report obtained by The Intercept.

The top-secret National Security Agency document, which was provided anonymously to The Intercept and independently authenticated, analyzes intelligence very recently acquired by the agency about a months-long Russian intelligence cyber effort against elements of the U.S. election and voting infrastructure. The report, dated May 5, 2017, is the most detailed U.S. government account of Russian interference in the election that has yet come to light.

These Russia truthers will never believe anything. The Intercept will now be considered 'fake news' or bought and paid for.

Michael Tracey, from his deathbed, is still pooh poohing it.

this is fuckkinng crazy to me. excuse me if i'm wrong but from reading over a years worth of posts in this thread i'd say you lean right/moderate. it's not like you're alone, a lot of right leaners loved bernie i just can't figure out WHY, outside of hating hillary clinton. sorry for rehashing bernie stuff like this but the "conservative bernie voter" has always fascinated me and i don't even know if it's a condition that could exist outside of last year's primary. and thats probably what worries me so, as a hardcore bernie ball licker.

JUburton wrote:Also it's painful for me to see "moderates" reach to try and make this admin seem anything other than completely unhinged and dangerous. Republicans literally ran and got elected a deranged reality tv star, none of that is an exaggeration. The only things modern conservatism cares about are endless war, cutting taxes for wealthy, restricting voting access, etc. As long as he rubber stamps their horrible agenda which is esp vicious to middle class, poor, women, and minority voters, they couldn't care less what he is doing to their image. Dems are complicit by having zero messaging and constantly compromising on ideals

The fact that republicans are still acting like they should be trusted to govern is amazing. The whole party is a clown show

I don't disagree AT ALL that this administration is unhinged and dangerous. That's actually the main reason I voted for HRC - "status quo" has worked out well for me personally and many people I know, so maintaining that was more important than whatever gains Trump touted (and obviously more than the risks associated with him).

I also don't disagree that the modern GOP is a joke. It absolutely is, which is in part why I asked on here last week about whether Pence as President would actually be worse (because at least Trump also has plenty in the GOP wary of his agenda).

All I was/am trying to provide is some sort of civil discourse to sort out what is ACTUALLY a big, immediate deal because people are freaking out daily/weekly about everything (Syria missles, healthcare, tax reform, covfefe, Paris accord, Russia, etc.) and I honestly don't know how much of it is a warranted threat and how much of it is simply disagreement with anything and everything Trump does and says because he's Trump.
