I don't have a good link handy, but I do know that the math examples that proliferated on facebook weren't really part of common core. Common core is merely a set of standards that states voluntarily accepted. The math stuff was based on the idea that students need to develop "number sense" in order to do well in higher level math classes. In addition, they were to discover ways to solve problems that worked for the individual student. I think teachers themselves misunderstood, by insisting the student do math "this way".

Of course the biggest idiocy of the whole thing was when parents complained how "this isn't the way I learned math" when often those very adults had never really learned math at all and in fact in other contexts would admit they were in fact "terrible" at math. And of course, the "old fashioned" way of teaching math was a dismal failure, compared to other countries.

I also remember Lil' Vulture learning math in the "new" way during kindergarten, about 2006, before common core was a thing. Her teacher had been specially trained in teaching fairly advanced math concepts in ways 5 and 6 year olds could grasp, which were similar to the techniques that later became associated with the whole common core debacle.

i used to help my nieces with math when i would watch them. i thought the "new" way was absurd.

Yes, I learned this via one of The Kid's math teachers. Most were OK, but one just insisted that he do all the stupid steps and write them out in order to receive credit for the problem. That was a HUGE battle because he insisted (rightly so, I think) that he didn't need to write anything but the answer because he could do the problems in his head.

He's been a Trump fan since the 90's, so it would be difficult for him to distance himself from Trump now, even though Trump supporters would love for us to forget all about him. Gorsuch "borrowed" from uncited sources for a 2006 book. It's debatable whether or not what he did rises to the level of plagiarism, but it's not a good look. At best it seems what he did was use Source A and instead of citing the parts he used/paraphrased he cited the original sources that Source A used.
