Health Care bill approved in committee with 3 defections - Brat (VA), Palmer (AL), and Sanford (SC).

It will obviously die in the Senate regardless, but the best thing for the opposition would be for it to be brought to vote and fail in the House. Nate Silver just tweeted that there are 16 firm nos on the GOP side, need 22 to kill the bill.

He was speaker for 5 years. Been 54 of them, so that's about average. Tough job. Don't know he could've done anything more with regards to the party. He seems to have been better at that than Ryan is.

i'm not sure why it would join or why NATO would want it? maybe i'm missing something. it isn't rated very highly on the democratic scale.

Yes, I was thinking NATO, but said EU.

They have a coastline and they border some places that have been trouble in the past. I would think it's strategic, if nothing else. It would also be nice to lock down the adriatic.

And if they have been borderline democratic, isn't it best to get them in our corner, pulling them away from the Russians? Over time, we could maybe influence them into being more democratic?

He took some schmucky position as Speaker, but is remember warmly as his successor seems to prefer scare tactics which he seems willing to followup. So there he is like Trump.

Shortey was the state chair of President Trump’s campaign during the primary elections.

Human fetuses in food

In January 2012, Shortey introduced legislation to ban the use of aborted human fetuses in food.[2] Shortey told members of the media that he had conducted Internet research which led him to believe a ban was necessary. The United States Food and Drug Administration said it was unaware of any concern. Specifically, the legislation would have prohibited the manufacture or sale of any food in which aborted fetuses were used in developing any of the ingredients. Shortey said that he was not aware of any Oklahoma companies that use aborted human fetuses.

I recently remembered a paper I wrote in 2012 breaking down some of Paul Ryan's key positions vs an aggregate of national public polling available on those issues. Tough spot when the same positions that make you immensely popular in your district makes you an anchor on the necks of your moderate members and those worried they will get swept away in an anti-Trump tide.

idk, some coal miners may like it; he's stereotyping them

The Public Broadcasting Act begins:

(a) Congressional declaration of policy

The Congress hereby finds and declares that --

(1) it is in the public interest to encourage the growth and development of public radio and television broadcasting, including the use of such media for instructional, educational, and cultural purposes; (2) it is in the public interest to encourage the growth and development of nonbroadcast telecommunications technologies for the delivery of public telecommunications services; (3) expansion and development of public telecommunications and of diversity of its programming depend on freedom, imagination, and initiative on both local and national levels; (4) the encouragement and support of public telecommunications, while matters of importance for private and local development, are also of appropriate and important concern to the federal government; (5) it furthers the general welfare to encourage public telecommunications services which will be responsive to the interests of people both in particular localities and throughout the United States, which will constitute an expression of diversity and excellence, and which will constitute a source of alternative telecommunications services for all the citizens of the nation; (6) it is in the public interest to encourage the development of programming that involves creative risks and that addresses the needs of unserved and underserved audiences, particularly children and minorities; (7) it is necessary and appropriate for the federal government to complement, assist, and support a national policy that will most effectively make public telecommunications services available to all citizens of the United States; (8) public television and radio stations and public telecommunications services constitute valuable local community resources for utilizing electronic media to address national concerns and solve local problems through community programs and outreach programs; (9) it is in the public interest for the federal government to ensure that all citizens of the United States have access to public telecommunications services through all appropriate available telecommunications distribution technologies; and (10) a private corporation should be created to facilitate the development of public telecommunications and to afford maximum protection from extraneous interference and control.[

What? Coal miners don't like Sesame Street or NPR? Also, if that's your justification how can we ask them to pay for X, Y, Z. Why is this the red line?
