even though I don't agree with the travel ban I do have to admit that using campaign statements and other statements as the reason for unconstitutionality that it would likely get overturned at some point. But I'm no lawyer

Poor Marco, the bed is not even cold and JH has moved on.

Jeff Flake IS someone to keep an eye on. Arizona is quasi-toss up and he's up for re-election in 2018.

Laws (and EOs, regulations, etc.) can be unconstitutional based on intent even if the wording seems constitutional on its face.

pacino wrote:more good news for liberals:
Some domestic programs, such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Institute of Peace, the Chemical Safety Board, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports PBS and NPR, are on the chopping block for elimination entirely. Trump is pushing numerous such cuts, long sought by conservative Republicans, in the spending plan, while allocating “more money for things like private and public school choice,” Mulvaney said.

“There's a lot of programs that simply cannot justify their existence, and that's where we zeroed in,” Mulvaney said, referring specifically to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where the $3 billion Community Development Block Grant that funds anti-poverty programs nationwide was eliminated.

The Department of Interior’s budget would shrink by 12 percent, HUD’s budget by 13.2 percent and the Department of Education by 13 percent. The Department of Agriculture would face steep cuts too, of 21 percent.

The Trump budget allocates $54 billion more to defense and law enforcement programs than Congress approved this year, a roughly 10 percent increase, while cutting foreign aid as part of a reorientation that Trump has termed “America First.” Trump also asks for a $30 billion supplemental payment for national security and the border in the current year. Mulvaney said funding for the Department of Homeland Security would grow by approximately 6 percent.

Funding for the United Nations would be reduced as America would pledge not to pay for more than 25 percent of the costs of peacekeeping internationally. Funding for the World Bank would be pared back by $650 million, as well.

really glad we shook the consciousness; this is so good for liberals

and something for the MAGA crowd, too:
But the National Institutes of Health would absorb a $5.8 billion cut despite Trump's talk in a recent address to Congress of finding "cures to the illnesses that have always plagued us." Subsidies for airlines serving rural airports in Trump strongholds would be eliminated. Also zeroed out would be funding for subsidies of Amtrak's money-losing long-distance routes, and a $500 million per-year "TIGER Grant" program for highway projects created by Obama.

Heartless, cruel, petty. The GOP wet dream

the only reporter tillerson is bringing on his first trip to Asia is from a conservative news outlet:

But those same reporters are now furious, frustrated and, in some cases, disgusted by what’s been deemed a violation of tradition and a public trust, with Tillerson’s decision to bring only Erin McPike of Independent Journal Review, a conservative news outlet which made its name with lighthearted videos featuring politicians and viral stories.

McPike has been with IJR for only a few weeks and doesn’t even cover the State Department: She’s its White House reporter and is often in the briefings. McPike won’t be acting as a pool reporter for the rest of the diplomatic press corps, meaning she won’t be sharing information about the trip with other reporters, which is what would normally happen if there were limited space for reporters and only a few were chosen.

IJR was founded in 2012 by Alex Skatell, a former Republican operative, and is owned by Media Group of America, which is co-owned by Phil Musser, a former executive director of the Republican Governors Association who has ties to Vice President Mike Pence.

IJR’s goal has been to fill a void it believes exists in social and mobile-first news, aimed at a young, millennial conservative audience. The site has picked up steam in the past few years, gaining traffic with funny videos of presidential candidates and other viral content. The rising profile paid off with the site co-sponsoring one of the Republican primary debates last year.

looked her up and found her thoughts on journalism:

MCPIKE: I don't think he has gotten really any. You know, and I think that that's an over-correction to what happened to President Obama, because there were so many positive stories and there is a backlash. Look, President Obama did deserve positive coverage, as did George W. Bush, as did Bill Clinton.

Every president deserves some positive coverage and we should do our part to do it. You know, we see so many media outlets now say they take an adversarial view of covering politicians. That's advocacy. We should be skeptical. We should ask questions. We should hold them accountable, but being adversarial is a problem.

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest To follow that star
No matter how hopeless No matter how far
To fight for the right Without question or pause
To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause
And I know if I'll only be true To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable stars

The best politics thread was the one I started a few months before the 2010 election about Boehner becoming speaker and it hit 50 pages on election night (back in olden times when politics threads took months to hit 50 pages)
