For a lot of people, pro- non-white IS anti-white. It's a deranged mindset with some obvious callbacks to some very ugly times in history. The GOP has a ton of strange one-issue bedfellows as voters. One-issue (pro-life) religious voters, one-issue (civil rights/entitlements roll-backs) racist voters and one-issue (pro-gun rights) redneck voters. Of course, there is a decent amount of overlap between these three groups in "real 'mericuh" (in which case they'd be three-issue voters!), but still... even picking just one of these issues (the first and third one, of course... let the right keep their deplorables) to relax the liberal platform could go a long way in winning back some big swaths of rural areas.

That video was something else. Clearly there are plenty who have no idea what is what. I wanted to stop when I got to the woman saying that the militia are service men, but I left the train wreck keep going. McCain is a plan from the commies? Pizza gate should be investigated? Muslims want to go to schools and kill children (because of sharia law)? Jewish person needs to go back to her country? Mexican America will not speak Spanish in public (if he said he was scared to I would completely believe it)? And on and on.

The good news is that these people are space cadets and actual conservatives do not think like that at all. I know the party has been infiltrated, etc., and I agree to an extent, but that is not representative of the whole.

"white people :eyeroll:" has been a liberal catchphrase for years. we recently had two awards shows where every big prize was framed as a gauge of racial progress. the tenor of political correctness and social media reporting has had a documented chilling effect on academic teaching and publication

I think everyone should have a thicker skin but it seems similarly pigheaded to me to not even acknowledge how people who didn't spend four years at a liberal arts college might be thrown off by this stuff

sure, i acknowledge they may be uncomfortable with the knowledge that they have a form of privilege, but it's still there. we can also acknowledge they have problems and societal ills affecting them, same as everyone. we can improve the lives of everyone, rural white people included, and still realize reality staring us in the face in regards to unfair treatment towards POC, LGBT, etc

Acknowledging they are uncomfortable does not mean they get some big 'pass'. Just as some should understand them, they should perhaps seek understanding of others as well. i deal with people of all stripes everyday and there's very little acknowledgement from the aggrieved segment of people we are talking about that problems other than their own exist.

I think it might be hard for some people to admit privilege when they're living in debt with no real meaning or purpose to their lives. I think for much of my life, still really, I take a very classist approach to these people. Effectively I say, you're white - comb your hair, get a nice suit and make something of yourself. Tonally and message-wise, it's the exact same thing as saying, these urban people need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

The second part of your post I agree with 100% but I think we all need to figure out what we can do better.

I think this might be one of those things we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel better. Like when we get fired, and we say, "everything happens for a reason." Well, not really. Sometimes bad shit just happens and a lot of times it will get worse. In the case of the space cadets, the majority of the GOP still thinks Obama is a foreign agent, Muslim, whatever, and there's literally a cult of personality in the millions that support Trump, who elected Trump. The conservatives that you're talking about still exist, but they are the same ones that laid the foundational framework for the crazies. Charles Murray & the National Review are just more erudite versions of these maroons.

I think there's a weird self-sabotage problem among rural whites, especially in the South. Consider--for non plantation owning whites in the South, slavery was an economic disaster--slavery seriously depressed wages for everyone else. (This actually sort of comes up in the old mini-series North and South, where a Northern Farmer was angry about how slave labor in the South depressed agriculture prices for everyone.) But poor whites fought against their own economic interests. They continued to do so, typically siding with rich whites rather than making common cause with poor blacks. Later on, they proudly resist unionization. Here, the "racist" angle doesn't quite work as easily. Yet, we've got a population that simply refuses to to defend its economic interests over and over again.

Obviously, though, race is a huge part of the problem. But there has to be some way to get people to understand how their racism makes it possible for people to screw them over again and again and again.
