No major (or in most cases any) nominations for: Sorry to Bother You, Annihilation, Leave no Trace, You Were Never Really Here, Eighth Grade, First Reformed (screenplay only), A Quiet Place, The Death of Stalin, Paddington 2, among others.

I've only seen 3 of those (Sorry to Bother You, Annihilation, A Quiet Place) and I thought they were all overrated. I haven't seen the others, but maybe this is one of those times I agree with the critics.

They were all good and Green Book is bad (I have never seen Green Book but I feel safe in this).

I'm guessing Bohemian Rhapsody or A Star is Born... maybe Vice... I liked Bohemian Rhapsody a little more than A Star is Born... probably take Malek for Best Actor... he really had Freddy down... I guess Glenn Close has Best Actress type chops but they could out of the box with Gaga or McCarthy

I think Sorry to Bother You jumped the shark at some point. It had some good moments, but I don't think it was worthy of awards.

Annihilation made no sense and the scientists were bad scientists. I also didn't like the final act.

I thought a Quiet Place was full of holes. It was a decent premise, but the plot was just silly bad. I also have trouble taking the office guy seriously as an actor because he is comically bad at his profession.

I was entertained by all 3, except maybe Annihilation because I found it annoying, but I don't see them as award worthy

Has anyone else seen If Beale Street Could Talk?

I wanted to really love this film, but it felt as almost nothing happened. The dialogue and filming early in the movie made it feel more like a play than an actual movie. During the a lot of conversations the camera would constantly be panning between the two actors that were delivering their lines and rarely cut. It was a distracting to me.

I thought the scene where they landed their apartment was really great. I enjoyed the cinematography on the street immediately after as they celebrated too.

I wish the family dynamics were explored a bit more. There is massive tension with his side of the family and then nothing.

It is powerful because of the makeup of the cast and the story it is attempting to tell. I just don't know if it told it all that well.

I said something similar, Cal -- that things didn't quite coalesce. I think you hit on some of the reasons why.

I remember it fondly though and keep going back to the score.

Haven't seen Annihilation, though I've seen lots of reviews that share your view. Definitely agree on the other two. I don't know if it's a weird year for the Oscars, but a weird year for me in that there were so few compelling films. Usually I've seen at least half the nominees, this year it's only the "least likely to be seen by swish" Black Panther that I've viewed (which was very well done for what it was and I liked parts of it far better than I thought I would. Snoozed during the fight scenes, though, and there were a lot of them). Do want to see Roma (and there's no excuse since I've got Netflix) and The Favourite. Rest of the nominees, meh. Among the overlooked ju mentioned, definitely Eight grade was excellent and I don't know how I still haven't seen Death of Stalin since it's been on my list since I first heard of it. First Reformed, maybe, even though I'm not a huge Schrader fan, but I've heard so many good things. Oh, and definitely Cold War, since I loved Ida.

Oh, yeah, and that Mr. Rogers film. And the other best doc nominees since they must be pretty fucking awesome to have pushed the Mr. rogers film out, since everyone loved that.

So, maybe not actually a lack of compelling films, I'm just a lazy bum.

I really want to see the Favourite. I'm going to try to find a decent copy again this weekend. It may be another few months though before one finds its way onto the internets

Finally watched Molly's Game last night and thought it was great.

could only find a semi-decent copy, so we skipped it for now. I couldn't get anything to download last night and all the links were broken. Spent about an hour trying to find a film or tv show to watch before giving up. I hope that's not a sign of things to come. I'm still able to get the netflix that have been produced or "owned" by netflix (the other stuff is blocked because it's coming through a proxy). So I watched 3 episodes of Lillyhammer on a friend's recommendation. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

Support the Girls is that rare film about work that actually feels like the real thing, so probably worth seeing for that. On the other hand, don't really expect a laugh out loud comedy, though there are lighter moments, and even with all the incidents crammed it it still feels like a very minor, slice-of-life film, so also don't expect some big message or resolution. Not great, but not bad.

I have very low expectations for the next Ghostbusters movie. Ghostbusters was a classic. Ghostbusters II was not good. In fact, though Lady Ghostbusters wasn't that good either, it was still better than Ghostbusters II. No reason to think Ghostbusters III is anything other than an attempt by some really old guys none of whom have made anything really great in the last half decade (and really, Bill Murray's renaissance thanks to Wes Anderson and I guess Groundhog Day sort of I think means that he's probably not been interested in Ghostbusters type stuff anymore and is likely to dial it in for this performance).
