No, you're totally missing the point. They're driving to #$!&@ Jersey to save $2 on their cases of Mountain Dew.

Because that's a thing.

That's ridiculous.

i know snark is cool and all. but philadelphia is enormous and a large amount of the population works OUT OF city limits(almost 600k daily commuters going in and out of philadelphia). not really hard to see the county line stores increase revenue. a 24pk of pepsi is an extra 4$. that adds up and can definitely make people shop close to work and not at home.

(i'm in favor of a soda tax, just not in this incarnation)

edit: i'll also sometimes leave the city and head to Cherry Hill to go shopping at wegmans. i'll save more money on regular items that will offset my 5$ toll. i lived near a bunch of people that trekked into Cherry Hill already.

The shoprite in Wilmington by the waterfront at one point (don't know if they still do, I haven't been down there in a few years) would actually reimburse you for the toll if you came from jersey and spent so much money, you just had to give them a receipt.

http://philly.curbed.com/2016/5/27/1179 ... iladelphia

Census numbers from 2013 found that some 253,000 people commute into Philadelphia every day. Meanwhile, 146,825 Philly residents travel outside of the county.

So it's really just 150k people who have easy daily access. The tax was could be improved in in a lot of ways but being against it because it will cost a few people jobs is just the dumbest baseline republican thinking (not pointed at jamie, obviously)

Meh, most things are cheaper outside of city limits. I've worked in downtown Richmond for a decade, and we have the same phenomenon, albeit on a smaller scale.

I never buy things downtown (whether it's at a grocery store, CVS, or convenience store) if I can avoid it. The soda tax isn't creating that problem.

this is all a familiar refrain of conservatism, though. forcing cigarette makers to disclose their ingredients will cause jobs to be lost, preventing deforestation will cause jobs to be lost, not having the CIA interfere in Guatemalan politics will cause American jobs to be lost! yet they're the same ones that would suck Jack "fire a bunch of low levels every quarter" Welch's diseased cock.

do most people buy soda in bulk? I would venture to guess most purchases are impulsive or with a meal while on the go.

Is diet soda included in this tax? And if so, under what rationale?

Compromise. The original proposed deal was .03/oz exempting diet drinks, but the council passed a .015/oz including diet drinks.

This is the most correct answer.

But diet soda isn't exactly 'harmless', ie. just because it's zero calories doesn't mean it has zero effect on the body. Science hasn't quite figured out exactly how though.

I was gonna say, he really does seem to be going out of his way to cater only to the people to the right of the casual FOX News viewer. Which seems like a pretty huge problem for the GOP moving forward, assuming we survive
