Montana’s Republican Party chairman has sounded the alarm against efforts to the conduct an all-mail ballot election to replace Congressman Ryan Zinke.

In an email to party members, Jeff Essmann warned Republicans the mail-in election would “give the Democrats an inherent advantage in close elections due to their ability to organize large numbers of unpaid college students and members of public employee unions to gather ballots by going door to door.”

At issue is state Senate Bill 503, which would require a mail ballot election this spring when Montanans are likely to vote to replace U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke, a Republican nominated by President Donald Trump to be Interior secretary. The Senate is expected to vote on Zinke’s confirmation next week. A special election would follow within 85 to 100 days.

it'll help Democrats too much. An honest politician!

The Montana democrats keep trotting out half crazy candidates for the house that are had to vote for, so I think the GOP hold is reasonably safe. Dennis Rehberg had to work a little, but not too hard to nail down that seat for a long, long time.

Who knows. It's a weird state, and they have a Dem Governor and one Dem Senator.

So they said they've cut 6000 employee hours. It's this guy:

Brown's Super Stores Inc. (Headquartered in Westville, New Jersey) – Operates 9 ShopRite stores in Pennsylvania and 1 store in New Jersey. Brown's has 5 stores in the City of Philadelphia, including 2 in South Philadelphia, 2 in West Philadelphia, and another in Roxborough. They operate 4 stores in the Pennsylvania suburbs including Bensalem, Cheltenham, East Norriton, Fairless Hills and 1 store in Brooklawn, New Jersey. Brown's is building a new Shoprite in Philadelphia's Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood, scheduled to open in 2013.

6000 employee hours = 300 jobs

that's a 20 hr a week job. that's not full-time caring for a family job that's being cut; more likely, they'll cut a few hours here and there, as they usually do when they hit a rough patch. i worked in a grocery store. i see grocery store paytubs everyday. they fluctuate every single week.

Layoffs abound!

1.5 million people live in Philadelphia and the working-age population of that works in many different sectors. It's sad if layoffs happen but thousands jobs end and start every month in the city. Not all of them get a writeup in the paper. it could have something to do with it being a contentious political issue and that they are planning on running a campaign off this; the threat of layoffs is of course going to be used.

Super markets already started laying off people last week. That article only touched on the beverage companies who are planning mass layoffs next week to combat drops in revenue. These are full-time jobs for people who more than likely have very little in life and struggle to support their families.

It is a complete disgrace.

I'm calling #$!&@ on that.

Edited to add: That ShopRite owner is laying off 300 workers at six stores (50 per store) because he sells less soda? Yeah right.

And if it is true, that dude needs to improve his business model. 50 workers per store is probably 10% of his workforce, if not more (hard to estimate without knowing what his total operation looks like). Does that mean >10% of his revenue stream is made up of soda sales? Because remember, it was just a 30-50% decrease, not a total loss in sales.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... much-as-50

Uh huh.

And I have to laugh at the idea of people living in the Philly area (where gas prices are nearly $3.00) will drive more than a couple of extra miles to not pay the soda sales tax, which amounts to less than the price of a gallon of gas. Some people may do that on the short-term, but they won't inconvenience themselves long-term if it doesn't save them money.

And again, these stores need to find a better model then if they were vulnerable to a dip in soda sales that they knew was coming.

What model would you suggest given how tight their margins are overall in the first place?

One that doesn't rely as heavily on one category of product. Allegedly.

OK, so come up with a business model to change people's behavior and buying habits while still making money.

Best of luck.

Don't most people in poverty work multiple part time jobs to make ends meet? It's easy to say this is 300 16 year old kids but not sure thats a great assumption.

i never said it was; i said the jobs themselves were not the full-time jobs brantt was claiming they were. i have little doubt these hours are mostly by adults.

think they're off their mark of 7m generated in the first month by like 4+ million.

would like to see the soda numbers of surrounding areas to see if the volume just moved to outside the city limits

read and heard on the radio they generated 5.7 million in the first month, which is much more than they projected (2.3 million).

not sure where you are getting your numbers.

dont want this to get lost, bc i am genuinely curious where the information that other people are getting is coming from

Brantt, you can do something as simple as adjust prices on other products to compensate. Not everything is set by vendor or even franchisor policies. Try to draw in customers due to sales and other areas of your store. People WANT to buy from the neighborhood store. They don't want to drive 10-15 miles to shop every week. They want convenient and as cheap as possible.

I don't know what the profit margin is on sodas, but if it's higher than 5%, you can even simply adjust downward a percent to try and salvage some sales. It certainly won't recover their soda sales fully, and it probably wouldn't be an option for every brand, but it will be for some.

There are things to do besides throwing up your hands and saying "well I'm screwed!" Especially when you knew this was coming for a long goddamn time.

to be fair to brantt, his $7 million number was correct

City officials are counting on $91 million a year from the drink tax, or about $7.5 million a month

he just didnt realize that...

Finance Director Rob Dubow predicted collections would get off to a slow start and projected January revenue to just over $2 million.

Makes sense. Negative press plus sticker shock means that stores will see an initial decrease in sales, followed by the inevitable market adjustments.

but the 5 plus million is pretty gang close to the average monthly one they are hoping for. if anything it is on pace to to exceed their projections.

you just described the start up plan of every successful business, bruh. it's a tediously cliched word in silicon valley, but what you're describing is called "disruption" and it's exactly what every successful entrepreneur has done or strives to do.
