Hail to the Thief: A Politics Thread

Heard that Benny Netanyahu will be visiting next week. Followed by King of Jordan then the new UK bloke.

People don't know why. Trump probably doesn't nor does he know how to have meetings with these people.

Will be pretty telling if they stay at the hotel or Blair House. Big test that if the answer is hotel Republicans will not care.

Saw the Inaugural Prayer Breakfast was hosted by America's All Stars

What is America's All Stars, you say?

America’s All Stars is the only organization in America with plans big enough and bold enough to fix America! Our dynamic programs incent kids to do what’s right by holding events they are passionate about. We create record-breaking events that mobilize and challenge millions of young people to serve others, which builds character while they are having fun! The events are held locally and promoted nationally by celebrities and professional athletes.

Maybe they're not as dubious as they sound, though. Maybe I'm just incensed at the use of the word incent.

So I'm picking 4 or 5 of my friends or family who voted for trump who I think are reasonable people and I'm going to engage them constructively and respectfully.... and slowly as to not scare them off or piss them off. I suggest we all do the same. This is going to take a while, but we have to eat away at his support and that won't be done with stupid "Trump is Hitler" comments (though he may be as far as we know).

Roll up your sleeves, gentlemen. Time to get to work renewing our democracy.

well, this new era of subversion's just getting started; effective expression takes some practice. For example, seems like it would have been easy for whomever to insist Interior's systems were hacked. "Hey, it's happening to EVERYone, there should be an INVESTIGATION".

of Il Duce, I did not previously know this:

At the end of [WWII] he tried to sneak over the Swiss border wearing a German greatcoat and helmet. But an Italian partisan recognized him and shouted out, “We’ve got Big-Head!”

Big Head, heh

Pretty shocking amount of people walking by my place in a steady stream. I'm not by the nearest metro stop, so this is impressive. Lots of yelling, some drums.

drumpf visiting CIA today. Would undeniably fit the plotline if they disappeared him. Idiot Sean Spicer all giddy that more spooks than the 300 they've scheduled for want to attend. He'd best bring his own bottled water.

Wonder how much pressure the republicans can withstand when try try and pass their ridiculous bills.

I do have a question though - as a democrat, would calling a republican rep's office have an effect or would they be just like "who cares you would never vote for me anyway?"

I think it's hard to overestimate the power of Conservative propoganda. They'll be relentless in selling their bills to the public as good for the masses. Take the most cynical approach to the issues they'll address and then the most cynical approach to selling them and I suspect you'll be pretty close to what will actually happen.

For example, I've been trying to figure out what they'll do to replace the ACA. Taking my own advice and thinking of the issue most cynically, I wouldn't be surprised if they announced the replacement will be in the form of block grants to the states and making each state figure it out. By doing so they will: (1) Offload the problem to the states; (2) be able to control the costs; and (3) blame the states when people lose their insurance. They'll also create a formula for the block grants which favors lower population states.

As for marketing it they'll trot out the usual propoganda points: "better to do things locally," "lower costs" (to the Federal government, though, not for anyone else), etc., etc.

At the same time, to pander to the Insurance industry, they'll mandate that states cannot establish a "public option" and will allow the insurance companies to sell across state lines.

absolutely can benefit. call, be pleasant, share your concerns, they take notice. votes are votes. Any congressperson looking at the voters marching today in DC and other cities across the US who is not taking notice deserves the stomping they'll get in 2 yrs.

look at it the other way - how much influence will you have if you don't call?

trump speaking at the cia, clearly has not prepared anything and he knows nothing more now than he did when he announced his campaign.

There were lots of people in DC. Seems every city had hundreds of thousands. Pretty wild.
