Started the First Law series by Joe Abercrombie. It's pretty good so far

Got this for Christmas and started reading it tonight. And this is the first post in this thread that I saw.

Cool title.

it's been discussed before, but since the topic is hot, Columbine is one of the very best nonfiction books I've ever read and worth checking out

The Power was not very good. Olive Kitteridge was pretty good.

wow. i've seen all the memes through the years and all the quotes and such from the movie (which i've also never experienced) but the main plot element is a total surprise to me. gonna be much better than the a-guy-goes-stir-crazy-and-tries-to-kill-his-family plot that I thought it was.

finally finished it and subsequently, after noticing all of the movie things that I had been exposed to over the years (the maze, "here's Johnny", the twins, the axe, etc.) decided to go down a rabbit hole about the differences between the book and the movie. Frankly I think what I've seen of the Kubrick film sort of made me not want to read the book all these years. And my gut was correct. Mr. King hisself even hates the movie adaptation- to sum it up, I would say due to a lack (or nonexistence) of subtlety and subtext that make the book so engrossing. He disliked the Kubrick version so much that in 1997 he participated in another video adaption of The Shining- this time a TV miniseries (OK, maybe $ had an influence too). I found the DVD of the miniseries for 3 bucks on ebay and will be viewing shortly. Still haven't made up my mind if I want to see the Kubrick film afterwards.

I think to this day that I have never been so mesmerized watching a movie as when I first watched The Shining. I didn't read the book first though (I think at the time, when I was ~16 and had never read any King, I didn't realize it was an adaptation).

I really enjoyed it, so my opinion is slanted, but I would say finish it.
Quick Google shows that GoGo is wrong with regards to the Kiwi and the Banana.

I'd finish any book I was half way done.

I have taken absolutely forever to read Cloud Atlas but I'm almost done. Think I'm going to read that book about Theranos next.

Did you watch the show slugs? I was smitten with that worlds mythos and now I wanna work my way through the literature, but was leaning toward the graphic novels. I guess I can't go wrong either way?

I have not but may after I'm done. The threads are certainly there in this but they're more discreet stories imo. Which I guess is kind of the point.

If you haven't read David Mitchell I'd recommend The Bone Clocks first. I think I like it more and it's similarly structured.
