Go with birch. It's more flexible. The downside though is it's more flammable, so not good if your dog has a tendency to burst in to flames like some purebreeds might.

We had one for my previous dog. Worked great. Not that big of a deal shock-wise (I tried it). No more shocking than an invisible fence collar (which we have for my current dog).
