I gotta ask, why is this any different than Bin Laden gracing the cover of Time?

I'm sure the article is interesting, but the cover photo is tactless.

On January 2, 1939, Time Magazine published its annual Man of the Year issue. For the year 1938, Time had chosen Adolf Hitler as the man who "for better or worse" (as Time founder Henry Luce expressed it) had most influenced events of the preceding year.

The cover picture featured Hitler playing "his hymn of hate in a desecrated cathedral while victims dangle on a St. Catherine's wheel and the Nazi hierarchy looks on." This picture was drawn by Baron Rudolph Charles von Ripper, a German Catholic who had fled Hitler's Germany.

I'm not as appalled as some. While the selection of the cover was obviously made with the sole intent of being sensational in order to sell more magazines, the photograph itself seems somewhat appropriate if your story is a bout a kid who in some ways had it good- looks, popularity, above average intelligence- and yet managed to end up performing despicable, atrocious acts.

Clearly though, they could have used the same photo and laid things out to convey the sense of a news story rather than selling the latest teen heartthrob. These guys deserve different treatment, despite what others might think:

As the Washington Post’s Erik Wemple points out, the image is exploitative—but it isn’t just exploitative: It’s also smart, unnerving journalism. By depicting a terrorist as sweet and handsome rather than ugly and terrifying, Rolling Stone has subverted our expectations and hinted at a larger truth. The cover presents a stark contrast with our usual image of terrorists. It asks, “What did we expect to see in Tsarnaev? What did we hope to see?” The answer, most likely, is a monster, a brutish dolt with outward manifestations of evil. What we get instead, however, is the most alarming sight of all: a boy who looks like someone we might know.

Judging from the article itself, the image is disconcertingly apt. The story, a two-month investigative report by Janet Reitman, tracks Tsarnaev’s tragic, dangerous path from a well-liked student to a monster, focusing on the increasing influence of radical Islam. (The headline on the cover suggests as much; those immediately outraged by the picture might do well to read the accompanying text.) That slide from likable teenager to troubled murderer is a potent narrative—and not a new one. Time magazine profiled the Columbine shooters through a similar lens, calling them “the monsters next door” on their cover and asking, “What made them do it?”

I don't have any issues with the picture being used, and the article clearly isn't trying to deflect blame, just explains how one can turn from "likeable teenager" to a piece of shit murderer.

The supposed "outrage" is just another example of how fragile our society is becoming, everything seems to piss someone off now. I'd be interested in seeing if there is any period we can point to to see when the shift started. Maybe its just the fact that there are more avenues for people to express unhappiness in today's world, making it seem more prominent now. Either way I think it is an interesting topic.

I can't get too pissed about this because if you're taking Rolling Stone seriously in 2013 I don't think it matters what shit they throw at the cover

the only people who this impacts are horny teen girls

i think it's pretty clearly part of the idea to humanize him for the story. that's the point. people are upset about that decision. but that's what the magazine press is for

personally I just find it hard to owe credibility to that magazine in the first place
