I got some madagascar hissing cockroaches for my classroom because my college students liked them years ago. But one of my high school students sent me this video and I'm having second thoughts about it. I didn't realize they had live births.

I lasted over a minute, mostly out of respect for the student who sent it.

I bought them a can of cat food today. They like cat food.

Roaches are the worst. The fucking worst. Few things fill me with such disgust and rage as roaches. The fact that they exist on the same planet as me makes me irate. I hate them. And you want them in your classroom.

They are madagascar hissing cockroaches. They don't infest things like american cockroaches. They are very large and hiss when you disrupt them. The kids seemed to think they were disgusting at first, then they thought they were funny, and now they are always asking about them. But the longer they are there, the more disgusting I find them.

I think teaching science is largely about getting the kids engaged in the process. If they are making faces and going "ewwww" and giggling and running away from the cage, then they will remember it and anything else I decide to attach to the experience. Emotions solidify learning. Same thing with the worm farm we're building and the shitake mushrooms we're growing. And, hopefully, the aquaponics system I'm trying to get financed will also create those experiences.

While taking photos for his new book "Serpentine" (Abrams, $50), Mark Laita was bitten by a deadly black mamba snake. (He even captured a picture of the snake biting his leg—though he didn't realize it until later, when he was reviewing his shots.) Fortunately, it hadn't injected any venom. If it had, the bite could have been fatal.

Mr. Laita kept at it anyway. The book has nearly 100 portraits of the slithery beasts, shot against a black velvet background. A little creepy, yes, but they're also strangely alluring. "Their beauty heightens the danger," he writes. "The danger amplifies their beauty."

Thought of this thread yesterday. I was out for a walk and went to the place called La Crevasse, which as you can imagine is a cliff with a lookout. I started getting close to the lookout area and noticed that the snow was super deep and starting to get holes underneath where the snow was melting from the bottom. The snow was so deep that I couldn't tell where the lookout platform started and I started to get the idea that the huge pile of snow I was standing on could slough off and send me over the edge. Even though I was by myself, I said "NOPE" out loud and turned around.
