i think the smart people who eat at mcdonalds know its not good for them, so they dont really "care" that what they are eating is unhealthy. generally if you "care" about eating healthy, you make a conscious effort to not eat garbage. and mcdonalds is certainly garbage.

While it seems likely that the kind of calorie matters, the amount of calories matter as well. And it's not really carbs per se, it's sugars and white flour (and potatoes and white rice) that are not good things to eat if you're trying to lose weight. And fruit juice is bad too, though fruit itself is okay, and better than a lot of other things you might snack on. And a lot of "whole grain" is really not good either. But if you think you can eat carb free crisco and hotdogs without the bun, well, that's probably not a great plan.

Also, consider "hidden" carbs--ketchup is pretty much 1/4 sugar (or HFC) honey mustard and relish probably have sweeteners added to them.

nobody goes there because the food is good, but i'm sure there are several people who are just eating there because it's fast and easy, but would like to limit the caloric damage. i really don't see what the harm is in having them list the calories. people having more information is always a good thing.

i haven't eaten at a mcdonalds in several years, but i go to taco bell and wendy's from time to time and i appreciate them listing the calories so i know how much damage i'm doing.

there's no harm in listing, it just doesn't matter.

npr had a story today about a group that researched eating habit changes in McD's once it was mandatory to have caloric info listed. They found there was no change at all in the caloric intake of McDs customers. So yeah, list it, but it's not going to do anything. The vast majority of the people going know what they're getting when they go there. As one of the people interviewed said "When I want a salad, I don't go to McDonald's"
