“The galaxy we live in is perfectly typical, but the nearby Magellenic Clouds are a rare, and possibly short-lived, occurrence. We should enjoy them whilst we can, they’ll only be around for a few billion more years,” Dr Robotham concluded.

A large body of evidence now suggests that Alzheimer's is primarily a metabolic disease. Some scientists have gone so far as to rename it: they call it type 3 diabetes.

Saw that today. Very scary. I guess it's not surprising that our health is so tied to what we put in our bodies. But damn, that's some harsh punishment

I don't think it's scary at all. It's pretty awesome that we're closer to understanding it, tbqh.

It's not the knowledge that's scary. I love that part of it. It's just scary that such damage can be done by eating the wrong things, and that so many people are affected without ever having the knowledge to do something about it. Getting fat may not be enough motivation for some people to eat well, but having your brain ravaged by disease might do the trick.

well, yeah. it's scary for a lot of people like me since i've been bigger my whole life(but getting smaller).

i wish all fast food restaurants back east had to list how many calories were in each item on the menu like they do out here. actually, i wish this would expand to all restaurants, but that seems pretty impractical at this point.

yeh, my grandma had type 2 diabetes and it was pretty severe near the end, like her water intake had to be monitered carefully. but she was basically completely checked out mentally. she had no reaction to seeing my mom, who was her favorite kid, for the first time in a decade. my mom said it was heartbreaking to see her reduced to a child again. the thing that really did her in was that she hated to take her medication, but that i think that was a side effect of her mental faculties failing.

is that not law here? I'm almost positive that McDonald's does, and I know Five Guys and Shake Shack and Pure Tacos do, off the top of my head.

This is backwards, in my opinion. If having less energy and being less attractive in the short/medium run isn't strong enough disincentive, there's no way the vague possibility of a disease, however awful, in the distant future will do the trick. (and I don't mean to disparage anyone, I know there isn't a straight correlation between weight and eating habits, otherwise I'd be a much bigger dude)

nobody cares about the caloric content anyway. We had to do it in the burbs when I worked at McDonald's in high school. I never had to replace any of the calorie count pamphlets from the display my whole time there

It ain't necessarily the calories that's killing people, it's the carbs
