My son, who loves all things Superhero, has always stated taht he didn't like SW. I keep telling him that he doesn't really know what it is about. He made it through the first 10 minutes of episode IV once and then asked to turn it off. It makes no sense...Jedi are basically superheroes...with light sabres...IN SPACE! (He loved GotG).

I told him about the trailer last night and how cool it looked and he seeme interested. We are going to try again with episode IV. I am going to pretend that I-III doesn't exist. Because is an almost 9 yr old, growing up in the 2010's US he knows that Annikan started good, turned bad and was L and L's father so I am not too worried about spoilers on that front (it is getting increasingly more difficult to shield him from Harry Potter spoilers, though).

He is super-psyched for Age of Ultron and Antman.

Bill McNeal wrote:Yeah, that's exactly it, watching Anakin be a hero for the first 2+ films and then go into ultimate villain mode and kill the kids at the Jedi temple is pretty rough. My son LOVED the clone troopers and to see them turn on and start offing all the Jedi was tough too. He was asking afterwards if only some of the clone troopers were bad or if all of them were. I mean, it wasn't the end of the world that he watched it or anything, just wish we'd waited until he was a little older is all, every kid is different though so to each their own.

Huh. I appreciate the prospective. It doesn't seem like any of that stuff affects my kids; they've never even asked any questions or had concerned like that. Heck, my older child always seems to "like" the bad guys in stuff even when they do terrible things (those are the toys he prefers and who he wants to dress up as for Halloween). I don't think they have much of a developed sense of morality at this point, nor are they disturbed by the fighting/killing -- they seem to recognize it as fake and nothing to worry about. Furthermore, I don't think they even "get" the implied torture in Sp IV or how many kids Anakin killed in Ep 3 and it just flies over their heads.

My concern with movies is for them being scared, which seems to happen more with dark ominous tones and more explicit violence. I think they'd be totally freaked out by, for example, any of the Nolan Batman movies or the later Harry Potter movies.

Anyway, the discussion is definitely making me wonder if I need to be more careful with my entertainment choices for my children.

Sounds like you are raising a couple of seriel killers, there.

My son is the same way. I think he equates movie violence with cartoon violence and gets that it is all fake.

I still haven't let him watch the Nolan Batmans, either. I think next year, he'll be ok with it.

He got a little scared when Spiderman and the Lizard were fighting at the end of that flick but he got over it pretty quickly...at least I think he did. I guess we'll see what his shrink says in a couple years.

I don't agree with using that order for kids. Kids generally like Ep I, unless they think it's too long. It's Ep II that they tend to find more difficult to get through, at least according to my friends who've shown it to their kids. It's the adults that rip on Ep I, although honestly Ep II is a far worse movie IMO.

I mean, it's not like kids understand the machinations of the Senate in Eps II/III or even understand things like why the Jedi Council isn't able to see the Sith threat coming. Kids like Jedi duels and starfighter battles and race/chase scenes. So by eliminating Ep I, you eliminate the best Jedi duel in the entire series, the second-biggest fighter battle in the prequels, and a lengthy race sequence. All because this guy thinks kids will get bored by a few minutes of dialogue about trade embargoes or might be confused by Padme using a decoy to trick potential assassins? Please. Hell, Ep I opens with the longest extended action sequence of any of the films other than Ep III (which begins with that insane battle sequence and goes through the crash landing of Grievous's ship by Anakin).

I used to advocate for the IV-V-I-II-III-VI plan, and I probably would still do it that way if my daughter was 8. But she expressed so much interest in the films, and with the TV show and new film coming out, I figured that I didn't have much choice but to start her on it now.

Agree on episode II for kids. My son gets really bored with that one, I think he's only seen it once. Kids do like the first one, it's not perfect and it's pretty goofy and all, but for a kid just starting with the franchise it's fun to see all the droids and light sabers and stuff.

Showed the trailer to my 7 year old son, who loves Star Wars, last night. He normally does not stop talking. Ever. But he was completely silent through the whole thing except for when the shot pulls out to show the star destroyer crashed in the sand and all he could say was "whoah". This broke his mind. Of course afterwards he had all kinds of questions, but it was cool seeing him speechless for a min.
Between age of ultron next month and Star Wars in December, it's a fun time to be a 7 year old

I showed the trailer to my sixth grade class yesterday. They spontaneously broke into applause at this part. It was pretty cool.

Everything I think he screwed up about Star Trek is perfect for Star Wars. Abrams found his holy grail.

Two rumors about future Star Wars films:

--The second standalone film that has been rumored to be a Boba Fett film might feature a young Han Solo as well. Not sure how I feel about that one.

--Disney is exploring whether they'd be able to bring Ewan McGregor back to do at least one Obi-Wan film set between Eps III and IV. There are rumblings that it might elaborate on the plot from the non-canon comic "Old Wounds" where Darth Maul tracks down Obi-Wan on Tatooine (which was also the inspiration for Maul's resurrection in the Clone Wars series). Now that Clone Wars is canon and his fate at the end of the series is unknown, that story is actually possible.

Smartest thing my family ever did was buy Disney stock in the early 80s. I have been loving all of these acquisition s & announcements.
