Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay was known to have thrown a palmball early in his career, though he rarely uses it today.

After reading that article, does anyone think that Gillick could end up back in Toronto with Beeston?

Riccardi wants to trade Halladay. Otherwise he'd have pulled him off the market already and saved himself and everybody else the agita. But if Rube wants a deal, he'd better do it before Friday. If there's no Halladay deal by Friday AM, Riccardi's going to hear from every other team remotely interested in trying to steal Halladay ad the odds increase significantly that either: (a) somebody comes up with a deal he likes; or (b) he takes another deal just to stick it to Rube.

n the late afternoon on Monday, the Rangers New York Rangers were convinced they were the front-runners to get Ryan Garko from the Indians. They were surprised when he ended up going to the Giants New York Giants instead. Texas is still trying to find a righty-hitting first baseman.

--The Rangers' No. 1 priority remains a starter, however, and they are very much part of the Roy Halladay sweepstakes. But at the moment Texas has two stumbling blocks when it comes to the Blue Jays ace: Toronto is emphasizing that three of the club's best 5-6 prospects be included and that group is all at either Triple-A or the majors (think Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland and Justin Smoak types) and the Rangers are very concerned about giving up so many high-ceiling, cost-effective youngsters ready to play in the majors now.

But the bigger stumbling block is finances. At the moment, the Blue Jays refuse to either take back a near counterbalance contract such as Vicente Padilla and or take on a chunk of the approximately $7 million left on Halladay's 2009 contract as a way to get into the Rangers' stacked farm system.

--The Rangers turned down an offer to bring Scott Kazmir home to Texas. The Rays have shopped Kazmir around a bit, even calling the Mets New York Mets , who expressed initial interest but nothing more. Tampa is trying to see if they could trade Kazmir, Carlos Pena and in the right blockbuster even Carl Crawford to free up dollars to make a bigger trade. The Rays are most focused on seeing if they can add Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez in one trade, though they continue to call on Halladay, as well.

--The Jays are emphasizing high ceilings and proximity to the major leagues over quantity in trades. But a scout who covers the Phillies organization said if Toronto is willing to take on some risk that at Low-A they have a 19-year-old starter from Brazil named Heitor Correa and an 18-year-old center fielder named Anthony Gose who have big-time potential.

"I know how far they are away," the scout said. "And I know how few guys make it. But you watch Correia and at 19 he is already throwing 90-94 mph with command and plus secondary pitches with his curve and changeup. And I know everyone loves (more advanced outfielders) Michael Taylor and Dominic Brown, and personally I think Taylor is not only a terrific prospect, but a great kid. But go watch Gose play. This kid plays center field more shallow than Andruw Jones and you can't get it over his head. And he has 56 steals. In five years, I don't think it is outrageous that we will look back and he will be the best prospect currently in the Phillies' orgnaization. He is a cocky kid from California who can just fly."

--A baseball official confirmed to me a report that Tom Verducci has up on SI.com that there is a split in the Phillies' organization about how far to go to get Halladay: special advisor Pat Gillick and manager Charlie Manuel want to move heaven, earth and Kyle Drabek to get Halladay and make a strong run at another championship this year and next while first-year GM Ruben Amaro is offering more caution in protecting the prospect base.

--A veteran scout on the Phillies and Halladay: "I know this cannot be a major reason why Philadelphia gives up what is necessary to get Halladay, but if I ran the Phillies somewhere in the back of my mind I would be wondering what happens if we get the Giants as the wild card in a best-of-five first round. You can end up facing (Tim) Lincecum, (Matt) Cain and (Randy) Johnson against the lefty hitters and getting bounced in three games. (Cole) Hamels is down some this year. With Halladay, you have a pitcher you know can go out and match Lincecum and let Hamels drop down to be the No. 2 starter and (Joe) Blanton to be No. 3 and so on."

And on the subject of the lefty dominance of the lineup, the Phillies are still trying to find a spare righty bat. The player they have had eyes for almost all years is Colorado's Ryan Spilborghs.

What cracks me up is reading comments from JP and from Jays fans saying "hey, either pony up or we'll just keep him" as if Doc's value with INCREASE over the next ____ months.

The fans I can understand but it can't be the case that JP is actually that stupid can it? If JP and the fans would rather have two draft picks than something like Drabek, Happ, Donald and whatever then more power to them.

Those comments on Amaro are dead on.

Also, if he doesn't make this deal, and they don't win the World Series, the pressure on Drabek to be great, not just good, will be immense. You're almost setting him up to fail.

- Why did Gillick have to retire - only to not really retire? It sucks.
