Pollyanna Thread

Postby TenuredVulture » Tue Mar 06, 2007 23:15:03

This is the thread to look on the bright side of things--for making lemonade when life gives you lemons, for positive overreactions.

We've got 6 healthy starters, and 6 is better than 5.

Victorino looks good.

Um, I'm going to need some help here.

There are many Phillies players who are not yet injured. Ryan Howard is one of them and a lot of them are pitchers.

Do you think he's worthy of a max contract? Is he showing enough?

looking at the stats as of gametime today, 18 of 25 batters had obp > 350.
lf, rf, 3b, 1b, c, and most of the plausible bench (dobbs, bourn, simon, barajas, nunez, werth) all hitting well, and rollins and utley at least getting on base and likely to come around soon. coste and rowand are the only likely roster guys hitting miserably.

8 pitchers listed with era = 0.00
starting pitching looks as good as advertised, with moyer, hamels, and lieber and eaton all good in their most recent start. garcia too, i think, in a b game.
is anyone worried about myers first game? i didn't think so.

gordon pitched yesterday and seemed fine. one could make a perfectly plausible bullpen out of phillies pitchers that have era's of 1.93 and lower so far this spring (gordon, alfonseca, bisenius, condrey, germano, castro, happ), without even having to use lieber or eaton there, so why worry about madson and geary having a couple of stinky innings?

yeah i'll get flamed....

nunez... don't count him out. don't look at him as a third baseman but rather as an eight hitter. if he can get on base, turn the lineup over, and play some very good d at third, don't be too upset.

the phillies are still in the NL, and at times there are still some certain roles expected in the lineup at various times. i don't care what his average or slugging are, if he can give me .350+ obp and move runners when needed, he will be an underapriciated, but very valuable member of this team.

It's true, the discovery of Burrell's vision problems will later be seen as a Eureka! moment that led to his emergence as one of the leading stars of the game.

You never had polyannas in elementary school or with co-workers at the office? Small gifts exchanged without knowing what the other people want...

Looks like it's a regional thing. I always thought it was Jewish for Secret Santa.

I remember the "pollyanna gift exchange" discussion coming up at college before. Some people from out of state had never heard of it. It's a term that's really only heard in Pennsylvania. So, it's not all that widespread, and even if you grew up in PA, there's a good chance you never heard of it.
"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "

In spring training, the Phillies are undefeated in extra inning games.
