Root, root, root for the Natinals

You put forward the suggestion that the collection of talent listed could be mediocre before Dusty, which is incredibly unlikely as only two of the players used as examples were actual full-time Reds before Dusty arrived.

this was the post I was responding to:
That "mediocre Reds team" had guys like Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, Scott Rolen, Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Travis Wood, Francisco Cordero, Bronson Arroyo, etc., most of whom hadn't reached their age 30 seasons yet.

I took that post at face value and responded to it.

The Reds were stinky for many years. Baker took over. They made the playoffs after his first two seasons. Then they did it two more times over the next three seasons. Success.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Me too. Reading, wtf are you talking about? I pointed out that those teams that the author called "mediocre" had a damn good roster. You suggested that the fact that they didn't make the playoffs before Dusty got there suggests that he still made something of them. The response was that, well, most of those really good players weren't actually on the team before Dusty got there, so your point is irrelevant.

What am I missing?

Yes. Because they had some really good players, including the best hitter of that period not named Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols.

But the good thing to take away from that is that Dusty is good at managing stars, both young and old. I guess. Especially if you ignore the fact that two of his teams (Giants and Cubs) actually did better after he left.

the quote in the article you were referencing said this:
He took over a mediocre Reds team and guided them to three playoff appearances in four years, which they hadn’t accomplished since 1973-76.

you responded:
That "mediocre Reds team" had guys like Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, Scott Rolen, Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Travis Wood, Francisco Cordero, Bronson Arroyo, etc., most of whom hadn't reached their age 30 seasons yet.

apparently that "mediocre reds team" did not have guys like votto, bruce, etc. as you said they did.

Well, the "guided them" infers that the "mediocre" adjective was being used to describe Baker's Reds teams as well. That's where I was coming from. At best, the writer ignores that there was an infusion in talent. At worst, he's downplaying the talent on the roster. Either way, it's an absurd statement.

Better?

Left here over money, and now he's with the cheap-ass(as far as coaches) Nats. lol

Dammit. He's going to teach Harper how to actually run the bases instead of just go full-steam constantly.

Him and Maddux are two good hires, unlike the Baker hire. The saving grace is that Davey is 70, so I can't imagine he'll stick around for long.
