This was understandably overlooked in the moments after the incident. It shouldn’t be. Imagine, in just after the Papelbon trade, that you asked Phillies fans to concoct a dream scenario for how this transaction would play out. Would any of them have suggested that the Nats would almost immediately begin to slide in the standings after Papelbon’s arrival, that Storen would wind up punching a locker and breaking his hand, that Papelbon would be suspended for throwing at Manny Machado, and that it would all culminate with Papelbon choking Washington’s franchise player, in the dugout, on fan appreciation day, during a blowout home loss to the Phillies, the day after the Nats had been eliminated from playoff contention?

It’s unimaginably worst-case for Washington, which makes it unimaginably best-case for Philadelphia. Fans of a last-place rival team shouldn’t get to be this happy.

This is almost word-for-word what I said to my wife after I found out that it happened. This is amazing.

I wasn't 8, but I remember feeling that way waking up to the Werth "Philly fans will get theirs" manifesto a few years back

Kid has been allowed to loaf for the past two years.

*blinks* looks at Harper's output *blinks again*

also, he didn't even loaf. he saw the popup, threw the bat in disgust and ran to first with his head down for a few seconds. i mean who gives a shit

Seriously. And they're talking about a player who plays defense so hard that he'll injure himself going into the wall in the 8th inning of a blowout.

There are many things I don't like about Bryce Harper, but lollygagging ain't one of them.

Harper is getting killed (by some) for being frustrated by popping out in the 8th inning of a tie game against the worst team in baseball on Fan Appreciation Day the day after his team was eliminated from the playoffs.

League suspension/team suspension will end the year for Papelbon.

Who you think is "right" here is actually a matter of who's less wrong, and depends substantially on who you hated more prior to the incident.

This is the kind of story all of your favorite Phillies from the 80s and earlier have hundreds of, but don't fly any more.

Going off of some of those "quotes", it makes you wonder if CJ got any of his sources from Jayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyson Stark

I forgot to post from the game on Friday that going into the 9th the Nationals run a video montage that concludes with... ROCKY! Last image is Rock with his arms over his head celebrating! Could have ended that video 2.5 seconds or so sooner and it would not have shown "a Philly icon". LOL

In baseball especially, there seems to be a serious blowback from "lifers" or "baseball men" against actual talent. No one gets mad at Chris Heisey for not running out a fly ball.

Harper wasn't going full speed but he was certainly going fast enough to be able to get to first if the ball had dropped in. He wasn't getting to 2nd on that no matter what.

Might have been a different issue had Ben Revere dropped it.
