ESPN says this is the first time in her career she lost a Grand Slam semifinal or final match when winning the first set (38-1)

The Italian lady's strategy of returning everything and waiting for Serena to fuck up was strong

She gave Serena like 6 second serves in her next to last service game and she couldn't do anything with them. Didn't have it today.

Yeah right, most women's tennis is bad enough for 3 sets. So many unforced errors, double faults, can't imagine what the play would look like in set 5.

he's not entirely wrong, but they should still go to 5 sets in majors. there's a massive gap between the men and women in tennis, it's just a fact. outside of the top 5 or so women, the field is pretty bad, which is why there's always so much turnover in the 5-50 range in the rankings. Aggie Radwanska was a top 10 player and she would hit 60 mph serves(she's still #15!!!!). You know what happens when you hit 60 mph serves in the men's game? You don't win a single service game because any top 50 player will hit return winner after return winner on you.

serena, when she's on could probably play competitive matches with anyone in the men's game outside of the big 4(hell, she could probably hang with murray), but any other women's player would get trounced by anyone in the top 100 on the men's side.

The men are just too fast (movement wise, not ball speed) on the court. She'd get smashed by any top 100 guy. Possibly top 250.

They should do best of 5 after the first week...once it's the top players, they can handle it and I don't think play would degrade too much.

1998: Karsten Braasch vs. the Williams sisters[edit]
Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[33] between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams, aged 17 and 16 respectively, had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked below 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager."[34] The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park,[35] after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two beers. He first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2.[36] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance." He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun."[37] Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.

An 18 year old 4th ranked Serena Williams claimed she could compete with men in professional sport; the US Open champion believing she could take on and beat the best players in the men's game. Nothing ever came to be from this claim.[38]

Pretty early on in her career though

I actually was wondering if the speed of play difference between men and women might affect the decision on how many sets to play. Just "watching the games" it seems there are more rallies and they last longer in the women's game, and so a closely contesested five set match might be almost unendurably long.

I have no idea waht the answer to this is. But I stumbled on this. I had no idea this was so.

In her opening round match on Tuesday, Serena hit the hardest serve of any female player so far in this year’s Open at 122 mph.

Since Williams has the best serve in the game and probably the best in history, that’s no surprise.

What is a surprise: The fastest serve in the opening match by the men’s top seed, Novak Djokovic? It was only 125 mph, a mere three miles an hour faster than Serena’s fastest delivery.

What gives? They were both playing night matches in similar weather on the same court using the same radar gun to time their serves.

The difference? The balls.

Oh, and they're not talking about testosterone.

Yeah but the Men also get the big serves in more consistently. If you watch Serena, she can go whole sets where she can't get a first serve in when it is going bad.

i also meant "hang with" as in she'd probably still lose 6-2 or 6-3. but it'd be a bit competitive. anyone who has played competitively knows there's a big difference between 6-0 and 6-2 even.

she could maybe beat someone outside of the top 250 at this point. she's much more mobile/powerful than at 17 and remember she didn't actually become dominant until she was 20-21(she won 5 majors those 2 aged years). At 17, the only time she'd gotten past the 4th round in a major was when she won the Open and then she didn't even win a major again until she was 20. I think it'd be more interesting if the match happened again, but it was embarrassing for them last time so I doubt it will.
