Could be two games that we lead till the bullpen gets in them

Seven inning games. Might only need the pen for a couple three outs.

Imagine how bad they would be over a full season with the back end of the rotation and that bullpen.

The pen looks like it's going to be late 90s Rockies at Coors ERA level bad. That's a lot to overcome, even if they start hitting.

I think segura’s contract is a negative value at this point unfortunately.

Talk about a trade people thought was great at the time and ended up being awful.

You either have to pay a big portion of his contract or include something of value to move Segura. After this year he's still owed like 30 million over 2 years and a buyout.

Many convinced themselves we were getting Arizona Segura and JPC was a definite bust.

Jury's still out on Crawford but we gave up on a once top 10 prospect way too soon. Can't help but wonder how much of the decision was to please Kapler.

Segura had a bad year last year, and was still a 2.3 fWAR guy. That's not, market-wise, an issue. Also, Seattle Segura hit .302/.345/.421 for 2 years after Arizona, which park-adjusted wasn't far off from Arizona (.780-ish park-neutral OPS vs .830ish in AZ).

Crawford is nothing. His OPS was 1.700-something after game 2, has gone down nearly every day, and is .873 after game 11. He had a .678 OPS coming into the year, in more than 600 PA. He had a .732 OPS in AAA (1147 PA), .769 in AA, .762 in A+, .752 in A ball.

Sucks to start off slow - 4 games in, Hoskins, Kingery, Segura, and McCutchen are 7 for 55 with a double.

Also sucks that people will think paying a 30-year-old catcher a ton of money is the right thing to do.

Segura is also just a bad fit for our park.

It seems like the plan for the bullpen was to get some looks at the younger and fringe guys early and then keep the best as the roster got smaller. That plan went to hell when the "tryouts" ended up blowing open close games.

I sure hope these people arent in our front office.

We left a ton of guys on base against the Marlins and got shut down by the best pitcher in the game last night. There's nothing wrong with our offense or defense right now. In fact, I think they're pretty darn good. Our pitching OTOH....

Moving forward, all available funds need to be spent on pitching, definitely not on old catchers.

Well, this argument helps me rationalize not signing JT. My logic says it's too much money. My emotions say he's the best catcher in baseball, so we need to sign him. Plus we gave up a pretty good P prospect. But, yeah, all assets need to go to pitching at this point in time.

You mean Crawford wasn't going to maintain a 1.700 OPS for the season? OMG!

Segura's 2.3 fWAR in 144 games ranked him 18th of qualified SS.

The Segura trade was bad when made and looks worse now given his production. If JPC becomes even league average while under team control it's a brutal.

I find it odd you're against a JT extention because of cost but defend Segura at his acquisition cost and salary.

Well if his contract isn't an issue, they should trade him pretty quickly, given that they're running into budget constraints, they don't think he can play shortstop anymore, and have young players they like at 2B and 3B.

Unfortunately, the "people" in your quote includes (are led by?) the team's franchise player.

I think the only way they don't do whatever it takes to sign JT (and who knows what that means) is if you bring in a new GM, and that guy can blame trading for him on the past regime.

If we don't trade for Segura, we're on the precipice of a home-grown, cost-controlled infield of Hoskins, Kingery, JPC, and Bohm. Not paying Segura(or Didi), frees up resources for other areas of need(pitching).

And going back one step further, if we don't sign Santana, and try to make Rhys a LF, we don't have to trade him and JPC for Segura in the first place...
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."
