Source: Phillies has $20k UFA deal with N.J. prep LHP Jake McKenna, St. Joseph's signee. 6'7/215 projection lefty with fringe stuff right now.

Feel like you should probably just go to college over taking this...

Maybe there’s increased risk going to college now since you don’t know how the training and stuff will go with Covid.

Or, in some cases, if the team will still be around in a year or two.

Jake McKenna- BA #434
McKenna pitched well in Jupiter over the fall and threw well in front of scouts in January after not being high on the radar for many evaluators. A St. John’s commit, McKenna has a huge, projectable frame at 6-foot-6, 215 pounds, but he will have to work on cleaning up his operation from the left side. Throwing from a high overhand slot, he produces forced riding action on his 12-to-6 curveball that has a chance to be above average in the future. His fastball has sat in the high 80s, but he has gotten up to 91 on it at times—it’s likely a fringe-average pitch for now. His strike-throwing ability suffers due to his robotic delivery, but with his great makeup he should be able to fix any issues with continued development at the collegiate level.

Probably the biggest fallout will be potential travel restrictions and budgets for many of these college programs. The northern colleges play in numerous tourneys in warm weather states early in the year. Money might no longer be there to do it. Is every team in the conference going to field a team? There’s going to be uncertainty there. This is going to be an issue for college athletics across the board, with some sports definitely more affected than others. Football and basketball programs are the income generators for athletic departments, what if they can’t generate that same money?

In this specific case 20k, tuition, starting a career in baseball and concentrating on it vs. a reduced season/schedule with maybe local community colleges filling it out, not too mention some classroom restrictions with regards to even studying towards your degree.

Some might think it might be best for the smoke to settle over the next couple of years with regard to both college sports and academia and just spend a couple years in a baseball camp type setting.

Central Missouri LHP Jordan Fowler (@jordan_fowler21)
Northeastern RHP Sam Jacobsak

...and here's McKenna signing his deal:

I still think you can offer HS kids the MLB scholarship program participation which may work out being more of a scholarship offer than the college is offering. Competition for college scholarships is going to be even tighter and a lot of baseball players weren't necessarily getting full rides even before everyone got an extra year of eligibility.

Can't find anything about this. Don't think they're related.

from Carter Loewen's college site:

Parents are Gord Loewen and Andrea Reimer of Abbotsford, B.C., Canada.

Easy mistake to make since they're both from B.C.. Though Carter's a college junior, so that would have been quite a balancing act for Adam early in his early career, since it's true he's only 36 now.
