Did this actually happen?

Baron, Jr and Eric sitting there thinking, "What about me, dad?"

Probably the first time he's ever played catch. I cannot imagine he pulls it off well.

He pulled the catch and throw off. The interview part was awful. "When the Sandman plays...."

He must need a child's glove to fit on those tiny hands.

He played baseball in high school. He’s a total piece of shit, but I’m sure he’d played catch before.

He was actually an amazing baseball player. One of the best in the country, if not THE best. Some were saying he was a sure Hall of Famer. The Yankees (and many other teams) wanted desperately to sign him, but he decided to go into real estate instead.

According to that Slate article, the Phillies were interested.

A simpler time but remember a few years ago Bill O'Reilly tried to claim the Mets were giving him a look as a pitcher but claimed that Seaver tried out right after him. Then everyone pointed out how it wasn't possible.

I am watching some KBO baseball right now and the Kia Tigers got their first two guys on base and then two batters came up and technically executed: the first laid down a perfect bunt to move the runners, and the second one, in a clear effort to do so, matched the effort of the pitcher, who was trying to generate a swing and miss or pop up with a very high fastball - which he executed, it was quite elevated - by obviously controlling the barrel and getting enough of it to send it deep enough to RF to move both runners and tie the score at 2-2. This was 7th inning. The pitcher’s only mistake was that he went to the well once too often - he had gotten ahead with a nice either 4 seam fastball or slider that ran in a bit, then generated a swing and miss on the next pitch, but tried an identical pitch following that *might* have been an inch lower.

It was an amazing and beautiful thing to watch: strategic baseball with thought and intention on both sides, not mindless power and three “true” outcomes.

To quote Keats, beauty is truth, and truth beauty.

Honestly this broadcast is amazing. Whoever the two are calling it are amazing. Very nice rapport, genuinely funny interactions and stories.

Hey I like home runs too, but I think the point is if you practice technique your chances of generating a run are much better if all you need is a bunt and a sac fly then if you *depend* on the HR.

I always think of the 2003 Phillies about this, and one specific game. The one where they beat the Reds 13-0. And they scored all the runs in the one inning.

They were great at that. Some games with big innings and big numbers. And lots and lots of games where they couldn’t do a damn thing it seemed. Also remember the game against the Orioles where Jim Thome went 0 for 8 and they didn’t score for like 16 innings or something (although they eventually did win that one). Even Millwood’s no hitter. Ledee homered in the first (lead off?) and they never scored again.

They were all about the three true outcomes. And they were one of the most frustrating teams I can remember watching.

If everybody's hitting homers, doesn't it de-value them?
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

I get it but I think the increase in Ks and HRs really colors our perception. I'll take most of the tradeoffs.

Overall has much changed for the worse? Sac bunts are down but that's more recent. If anything I miss the running game.

Quick snapshot of averages in most of our lifetimes:
