MLB is asking if the players can report to camp by July 1 for a July 24 start

According to Nightengale, the first game played will have Jackie Robinson throw out the first pitch and Harry Caray will sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame".

So is the DH in the NL still a thing since there was no agreement? It seemed like a compromise from the owners.

I think Heyman gave Manfred his twitter account.

@JonHeyman
MLB owners did the right thing by giving players their 60 games rather than punishing them for the rejection. Hear from players who were pleased MLB took the high road in the end on this issue. Of course, by giving them the full 60, it may also blunt a grievance, to a degree.

So we gave up shares of playoff money, eliminating the qualifying offer for 2021, paycheck advance forgiveness, Covid 19 protections, and protection for non guaranteed arb contracts for next year in order to hold on to our right to file a grievance...

A grievance that, odds are, they won't win.

The Players really really valued "not agreeing with whatever the owners offered". I guess that's their prerogative. The nature of sports labor negotiations are inherently imbalanced. The owners "own" for their entire lives. The players are bargaining with respect to an average career of 5.6 years. Owners know that the players always blink because the relative stakes are higher for them. Players wanted to show that they wouldn't I think.

May be enough to stop the owners from trying anything grievance-worthy in the first place though.

On top of wanting to show the owners they wouldn’t blink like Squire said, I think they also just dont trust the owners to not try some funny business.

They've left themselves very little margin of error with this schedule, and it seems like their planning isn't great, so I am not optimistic either at this point. I don't think it will take much to derail this.

Question, in any of these sports if any of the players get COVID 19 and are sick enough to go to the ICU, would they end the season, or would it take a death for that to happen?

I guess it is unlikely for a pro athlete to get really sick from the virus but it could happen. Maybe more likely team personnel or a family member. I know there are concerns about older coaches.

I just don't see how it ends well for any US sport to begin now with the current state of the virus and what we can likely expect for months.

^^^This^^^

They have to reserve at least the right to grievance, or the owners can/will fuck them over, big time.

Just like they had to come back at full pro rata. Anything less sets a bad precedent. Any future financial adversity would be cause to further reduce salaries.
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

Bob Nightengale @BNightengale

#MLB and the #MLBPA continue to exchange ideas with the health and safety protocols. There are no major snags. The union already informed MLB that it plans to play, and be in spring training camps by July 1 with a 60-game season starting July 24-26 weekend.

My daily take that sports should be fine. All the pro leagues are doing this right so far. A sound plan crafted in collaboration with the medical community, leadership at the league and club levels (and maybe most importantly, TV networks) who fully understand how much is riding on getting this right. Still several weeks to get teams into their quasi-bubbles and recuperate their positive cases.

Player behavior may be a challenge, but I think things will calm down. It's painfully obvious that the Phillies, Orlando soccer, LSU football, K-State football and maybe other mini-outbreaks stem from going to indoor bars/parties. I doubt college athletes can kick that habit, but the pros for the most part should be able to manage.

Finally, one key ingredient to avoiding outbreaks is to have a ton of money. For testing, staffing, lodging and generally not having to mingle with normal folks. So American sports are on solid ground in that sense.
