When people shit their pants over a "we didn't get Wacha because we refuse to go over the tax" story, it IS about Wacha. IF there's an opportunity to change the fortune of the team - say Bryant or Lindor - AND the talent cost is acceptable, and we STILL refuse to go over the tax, then it's about the philosophy. The Phillies, whether it's Middleton or Klentak or whomever, don't owe the media or the fans some detailed look into their plans... it would be foolish to do that.

FWIW Gelb said yesterday the team thinks it was dealt some bad luck last year, and would be willing to make a bold move in July

Honestly without blowing through the tax line I think they were going to be a 3rd place team on paper no matter what they did. Maybe you could argue they blow up their farm and add Bryant but didn't think that was going to be likely since the Braves have better prospects.

solid point. i dont think id blow through tax line for bumgarner. id try and cut some salary somewhere and make room for wade miley on a 1 year deal though.

Well not really. Some years you have good luck overall, others somewhere in the middle. Losing McCutchen and eight of your top nine relievers was pretty rough. None of the young pitchers improving really, although that could easily happen again.

no offense to anyone and i guess we can only go based on what we're hearing and reading but everyone is pretty much talking like the thoughts 'well we're done now' is gospel.
