This doesn't seem possible, but the Phillies have been 6 games over .500 11 different times since mid-June, but failed every single time to go 7 games over.

They'll try again tonight at 71-65.

Pivetta is back (ugh)
Pirela is up
Maik will be up later this week, then that’s it for call-ups

Segura is available off the bench tonight

@MattGelb
Johnny Almaraz has stepped down as Phillies scouting director, the club said. He was not fired and he will remain in the organization as a special assistant. Almaraz wanted a role that would permit him to spend more time with his family. The Phillies will go through an interview process to replace Almaraz. Greg Schilz, who is the Phillies' assistant director of scouting, will be a candidate.

Is that good or bad?

Now finally tied with last year's record. Here's hoping we can now create some space, since after this point in 2018 we only won 6 of the next 23 games (although 2 of the next 3)

You're telling me they lost 16 of their last 20 games

Well no, but only because they won their last two games of the season after that 4-16 stretch.

that sorta thing will kill you.

according to sportrac, machado's luxury tax accounting salary is = $30,000,000
according to fangraphs (not yet updated for yesterday's games) manny has delivered $22,800,000 of on-field value so far this year, on pace for a season total of $26,960,000... implying a net ''loss'' of a bit over $3million]
according to baseball reference, harper's luxury tax accounting salary is $25,384,615
according to fangraphs (not yet updated for yesterday's games) bryce has delivered $28,900,000 of on-field value so far this year, on pace for a season total of $35,470,000... implying a net "profit" of a bit over $10million]

also of note: harper has now managed to get well ahead of kingery, but has outhit machado so far by a big enough margin that machado is unlikely to catch up over the last few weeks of the season. projecting kingery's stats over equal playing time, he would be between harper and machado in value, but closer to the former. not as hard to believe as outperforming both of them, but still pretty darn hard to believe after his inauspicious 2018 debut. maybe the kingery contract doesn't belong on the list of klentak's poor decisions afterall!

I hate to be all Larry Bowa but honestly I preferred Harper over Machado after the latter’s dumb ass “I don’t run hard” comments or whatever he said exactly. Hey asshole, you are going into the offseason looking to land a $300M+ contract; even on the rationale of “better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt” I found the comments evidence of profound stupidity and/or ignorance, and that gave me a lot of pause.

Harper has been very good, but I have been most impressed by his consistent effort and engagement. My impression of him from afar was that he was a bit of a prima donna and that might prove an issue; while I am sure he has his ego, the effort level has been most impressive.

It has been a nice first year of Bryce. If you told me now it was guaranteed he'd do this every year and never have one of those MVP-level 1.100 OPS seasons, I think I'd have to take you up on that bet. This is the kind of production I expected from him essentially. Playing a nice right field too.

Also remember he basically had no spring training with his teammates and trained on his own, the stress from family to sign out west, and the whole first-time dad thing hovering over him. I think he'll be even better once he's truly settled and becomes a team leader (right now it's on Rhys)

Yeah I've been extremely impressed with Harper as a teammate and person, from what I can tell. Ditto his defensive effort and skill.

He's been a touch less wow factor at the plate than I imagined, but still highly productive obviously.

Bottom line, a very good player in his prime. Which is great to have and costs a lot.
