Is THAT what that stupid wave was?

I might have to take Santana’s side.

Culture is a loosy-goosy concept that doesn't always align with winning. A culture that leads to success isn't necessarily the culture that a player says is "better." A culture of accountability, self improvement, and dedication to winning is bound to be uncomfortable for some. So when I see that a player was too intense for the clubhouse, and then succeeded elsewhere, it makes me question whether our culture truly improved in the ways that are claimed.

Highest RBI total of his career. In many stats it was his best year since 2015. I would say that it was overall positive except for the SO total.

To be fair, it's not like Santana was here for a decade and then broke out once he left. He was here one year and this year had his best statistical season by far at age 33. You can make the argument that the Phillies hitting approach led to Santana's down year, and maybe there's some merit to that, but if even noted salty prick Jake Arrieta is glad you're gone, and your most memorable moment is destroying someone else's property with a baseball bat, I can't really say that he was the protagonist in this scenario. Sometimes, baseball is just a funny game.

Middleton is fine. It's his alter-ego MEDDLETON causing concern.

@jaysonst
I'm hearing buzz that it's now possible there won't be an announcement on the fate of Gabe Kapler until next week.

Which I'm taking as a sign the #Phillies understand they have more to decide right now than just the fate of the manager.

@MattGelb
A reminder that it took the Phillies eight days after the 2005 season to fire Ed Wade. The longer this goes, the more questions there are about leadership above the manager

Klentak - "Look, we all agreed this was going to take some time. You don't change an organization overnight. We're only 2 years into a 5 year plan. Let's address some very obvious problems and make some improvements for next year."

Meddleton - "OMG HAVE YOU SEEN THE LATEST WIP POLL?!?!!? WE NEED TO GET CHOLLY BACK IN HERE!!!"
I hate signatures, but I love irony.

Or at least turning too it as your source of reliable content. Especially with so many better options these days.

What could they possibly need a week for?

If Middleton is retaining Klentak he simply should tell him it's his (Klentak's) decision on Kapler, but if they don't make the playoffs in 2020 they will both be gone. Is Klentak willing to bet his career on Gabe Kapler running the team?

Retaining Kapler is a big gamble due to the fan backlash alone. But if Klentak is staying as GM, it should be his decision.

maybe they are thinking like me and don't want to fire kapler for the sake of firing him. unethical as it is, it would be smart to go through some agents to see who is available, interested, and demands from both sides in the hope of getting an upgrade at the managerial position. if it doesn't seem everyone is on the same page, then going with kapler isn't the worse option. i like the guy, but i would definitely prefer someone more experienced yet cut from the same cloth who's had experience moving forward. i definitely don't want to go with someone not on the same page or away from some of philosophical and organizational changes that have taken place. i would ideally want a manager that would have some significant input to the roster too, to give our rookie gm a bit of a hand.

This may not be the best endorsement of Middleton as an owner, but he is undecided on who he is keeping and firing and he's still deciding as we speak.

The good news is he may clean house and rebuild this thing the right way.

The bad news is he should already know what he wants to do by now, and you gotta worry about too many influences in his ear.

kind of curious about rebuilding the "right way". i thought the plan was solid and there are limits to the time and extent of implementation, maybe you can argue that those executing the plan may not have been up for the task for one reason or the other. sometimes things don't work out or may take a little longer but i don't think the front office did anything necessarily the wrong way. i see some tweaks that should've occurred...
