Five days ago they were behind the Phillies and five games out of the second wild card, an even more tenuous situation than the Phils. Then they put together a five game win streak, and have a chance (with a cubs loss) of only being one game out of the second wild card. In the annals of baseball, a five game win streak isn't even something worth noting. If the Phils had done the same they'd have a shot at being tied for the second wild card, and only two games out of the first wild card.
Now, the fact is they didn't, nor have they shown any indication of being able to win five games in a row. But it doesn't really seem a possibility you can dismiss, so it seems silly to wholly give up on the season.
And anyway, I'll be happy if they have a winning season and are playing meaningful (even if only mathematically) games the last week. anything else is gravy.
