They'll pay hundreds of dollars to watch baseball, Ray...

6! That is impressively low. We might have a league leader in single digits. Not sure if that's ever happened, but it seems unlikely.

Edit: https://www.baseball-reference.com/lead ... gues.shtml

It's never happened in the NL. The league leader in the AL had 9 in 1956 and 1950.

I initially thought you meant lead league as a team so wasn't sure where you were going with that

That kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? I'd rather see major leaguers back at Doubleday Field.

The bottom 3 teams in the AL Central all have a run differential of over -100 (only the Marlins and the Orioles have that elsewhere). The bottom team (Tigers) have the same negative differential as the two teams above them added together (Royals and White Sox). What makes that strange is that the Royals and White Sox have the same differential.

White Sox -109
Royals -109
Tigers -218

Oh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.

For me, easily the most disappointing thing about Chris Davis sucking the last few seasons is he could have crushed the single season strikeout record of 223 by Mark Reynolds. In the past two seasons, he only played 128 games each but still managed to have 195 and 192 strikeouts.

So I had no idea that Crash Davis was a really player who played for the Philadelphia Athletics.

Not a catcher though.

Also according to his Wikipedia page he was drafted into the Navy during WWII - and assigned to WWII theater Harvard University to coach the ROTC baseball and squash teams.

Has there ever been any kind of documentary done on the 1981 MLB season? It seems like it would be fascinating to learn how the fuck they decided that four teams should just have half the season off (since they were declared first half division champions) but still have them play a bunch of games. Or how the Expos were allowed to win the 2nd half division with a record of 30-23 beating out a team with a 29-23 record. I assume lots of cocaine was involved. And I also assume a documentary hasn't been made because it would just make the people in charge of baseball at the time look like complete idiots.

Phillies won the 1st half by 3.5 games but played 5 more games than the 2nd place Cards, who also got screwed in the 2nd half

Cards and Reds had the best winning% in each division as a whole and neither made the playoffs

-- The Cardinals and Reds had the best overall records in the NL divisions but neither one made the playoffs because they didn't win either half
-- The Royals were 50-53 overall and would've been 4th in the AL West, but since they won the 2nd half, they made the playoffs
-- The Cardinals and Pirates only played 102 games while the Giants played 111

The strike was due to owners wanting compensation whenever they lost a major free agent. The original plan was to have the signing team protect 12 players and the losing team could pick from the remainder, but the players argued this diminished the value of free agency. They eventually agreed to a plan where the losing team could pick from unprotected players from any team, not just the signing one. There was also an agreement where players could only become free agents after six seasons.

Does anyone remember what was supposed to happen if the same team won the first and second halves? They still had to play someone in the playoffs.

They'd take the 2nd place team, like they do in the minor leagues now. They originally said it would be the team with the best overall record then changed it

Anyone else notice on ESPN player pages, in the Player Profile tab, that some players have the “Projected” line on their stats that show what they’re on pace to finish the season at, and others do not?

I was looking at Hoskins’ page and saw he’s projected to finish with 33 hrs for the year. I jump over to Trout’s page and he doesn’t have a projected line at all. There are others. I wonder why that is?

Kind of crazy that at that point you could even think in those terms. "Sorry, Joe, your teammate Alex signed for big bucks, so you have to move to Milwaukee."
