Those teams probably wished they signed Vlad Jr. too

But they never had a chance anyway. The players basically choose where they want to play over a year before signing period

Ok I guess I don’t get how it works either.

It's why baseball wants an international draft with slotting like the US one, but recent changes with pools and penalties have helped to control things a bit

Vlad Jr. hasn't exactly been great in the majors either.

I'm doubt its going away anytime soon but it probably ought to be shortened. You've still got teams making vanity picks in the later rounds and drafting guys they know they most likely won't sign.
